I am having problems teaching my puppy to walk with his leash. Often I'll take him outside and he'll refuse to walk. I drag him with the leash until he starts walking but lately he won't walk and will cry and lay down until we turn around. Any advice?? This is my first dog so everything is new to me. Thanks!!

How many times has hee been on the leash? I have always used this simple technique to get a puppy used to the leash:
Take the leash, and put it on the puppy. Let the puppy drag the leash around on his own (with supervision). It will get him used to having it hooked to him. Just make sure he doesn't try to chew on it... if he tries that, shove something else in his mouth, like a yummy chew toy or a rope tug toy. If it helps, you can also give him treats while the leash is loose and dragging behind him. These things will teach him that the leash is good. >^_^<

I always find the easiest way is to get one of your friends or someone you know with a friendly dog put the puppy on the lead put other dog on his lead, take both leads in same hand and you usually find puppy is so busy trying to keep up with other dog he is walking on the lead and he does'nt even realise it. This is how I always get pups used to the lead. Good Luck, let us know how you get on.

Yes, let the puppy drag his leash around, if he just sits there, try coaxing him with a toy, throwing it, ect.

As a new puppy owner myself, I too encountered this. The first few days I let him drag his leash around when I was supervising him. I found this helpful with potty training too.....as soon as I noticed signs that he may have to go, I just had to pick him up and rush him outside without having to worry about the leash. (Ha! Only took him outside unleashed once.....small as he is, he's fast as lightning!)
Now, going for walks on the leash is still another matter entirely. He likes to think he's boss and we are going to go in whatever direction his little nose pleases. Im working on this by allowing a generous playtime first.......then we try to walk with the leash. I'll coax him along with little bits of his kibble and talk wonderful nonsense to him the whole time. Im sure the neighbors think Im nuts, but Im having fun!:D
I had a client who's dog didn't like walking on the leash and just wanted to lay in the grass. On the first session I told her to bring a special treat the puppy doesn't get often, like slices of hot dogs, and show it to the puppy. When the puppy comes, praise and give it the treat. Always treat and praise at every opportunity when the puppy is beside you, walking or just standing with the leash loose. Begin walking, treating when the puppy is next to you. This also helps teach it not to pull on leash. If the puppy pulls, stop and turn around. When it comes back to your side praise and treat and make a fuss over it. It'll get the idea soon enough. This also helps them to begin to learn the Heel command. Hope this helps some.

Once the puppy is used to having a leash connected, start taking small walks. If the puppy pulls on the leash, give it a quick pop--it's not a jerk or a pull--you're flipping the leash like you would shake out a bedsheet...so the movement ripples along the leash...and it's the noise that startles them. Just a little pop.

Ive been trying the praising when Max walks by my side (which isnt often I can tell you!) but it makes him so excited that he jumps up and hangs from my clothes, bites me and grabs his leash and starts to play tug of war!

my best adviced for this is, DONT DRAG HIM.. LOL that makes it into a bad experiance.. and they wont walk then, Instead Bring a pouch full of nice easy to chew stinky type treats.. or cut up hot dogs, and stand in front of him.. and give him treats when he walks to u.. And as he gets more and more used to walking lengthen the time he has to walk before he gets a treat, and eventually he should get used to walking.. Also Like the previous post said, Let him walk around the house with the leash on.. even try feeding him, with it on, so it makes for a positive experiance! I Hope this helps.. and good luck
