I like the bigger dogs

those little dogs like jack russell's and yorkies seem to be more visous than the larger dogs.

i like staffs, rotti's, and french bullmastifs (i know thats spelt wrong). All very good guard dogs. We have a rotti and he looks after the house while were at work.

Doberman's

Dobermans , of course :D

They are regal, sleek, athletic, intelligent, fearless and noble. Everything I am looking for.

I lead a very active life and my Dobes can keep up with me. Dobes love people and are sweet kind and loving dogs.

Once you get one you will never go back :D I found that out with my last Dobe who passed away 10 years ago. We have two now and male and a female.

Awesome dogs !!!!!!!!

+1, Doberman's. Take a look at my blue boy in the new members' section. But Boxers are an EXTREMELY close second. They are also all those adjectives you listed, plus they are eternally youthfully exuberant!

I like Golden Retreivers. We are getting our first one in March. I like the gentleness and lovablity factor.I second this. They're a wonderful breed and are particularly well suited for families.

I hope you enjoy your pup when you get him/her next month. We had a blast with ours, and she's still our baby even though she's now full grown.

we have a boxer mix and a siberian husky. i love them both but for different reasons. both are sweet and lovable and full of energy and very intelligent! the boxer is very protective of us but has never shown any aggression towards humans. the husky on the other hand never meets a stranger and loves all people. i would love a pack of huskies or another boxer, but the wife (and house) will only allow 2 dogs for now :)

Oh I love so many. My most favorites would have to be a beagle of course. Cuz they are so smart, and cute, and sweet. I just cant resist those eyes, thats probably why mine is soo spoiled...lol

I also love alaskan malamutes and siberian huskies. I think they are really beautiful and intelligent dogs and I cant wait to have one of my own!!

I love Australian Cattle Dogs because...

*they are highly intelligent (I like dogs that are easily trained)
*excel at agility (a sport I really want to get into)
*they are protective (i love the feeling of being safe!)
*energetic (because i love going for long walks and to parks and beaches to play with my dog)
*dependant on people (ACD's love car rides, and they want to go everywhere with you, which is great because I love taking my dog everywhere with me!!)
*They are medium size (perfect size for travelling, not too big or small)

And a bonus is their gorgeous looks!! They come in 2 coat colors, red and blue... Look at how beautiful they are!:

(Blue is on the left, red on right. Both colors can come with or without a mask.)

I love all hound breeds. They make wonderful pets for children. And they are intelligent. I have always had some breed of a hound. I grew up with them and they are positively my favorites..especially bassett hounds and beagles.(I may be partial considering I have a beagle and a bassett hound) The only neg. thing about a hound is they are nose driven. The have a tendency to be a lil stubborn/independant. But I like it...mine are all spoiled rotten. I am also very smitten to any animal that has been mistreated, or abused or abandoned...almost no matter the breed. I CAN NOT STAND FOR ANYTHING TO SUFFER, except people who make animals and children suffer... I think anyone who mistreats animals or children should have the same done to them but 100xs worse...

i love most all breeds of dogs and can honestly say i do not have a favorite breed but i do have favorite dogs. i love the personality of my wheaten terrier. very playful and a quick study, she is a favorite of everyone who meets her. the afghan hound is very clown like and very regal... not the dog for everyone as they tend to be a little aloof. the standard poodle is very intelligent and eager to please. the long haired chihuahua thinks she is a rottie in a 2lb body and a ton of fun to watch terriorize the big girls. :)

thought id post this here rather than start a new thread! in peoples opinon, what is the most obedient/easy to train breed? thanks:)

wow spotter, that is a big question :) i have 4 breeds in my home right now and of those, the wheaten terrier is by far the most intelligent and obedient. she was and is very quick to learn. it took her 4 doggy treats to have the sit command perfected. bambi was the quickest to housetrain and the most loving too. they are a terrier so there is some stubborness but not like in most other terrier breeds.

the afghan and chihuahua are the most challanging here. the afghan requires a whole different way of training. they are aloof and not easily bribed by doggy treats. they are easily turned into a skittish dog...
the chihuahua, though very intelligent doesn't need to know much more than the basic commands...she gets buy on her cuteness :)

IMO it has to be the border collie;)

MrsRottie
03-17-2006, 10:36 AM
Spose you might have guessed from my user name, but rotties are the breed for me. I adore everything about them, from their stubborness right through to the intelligence. I met my first many years ago when I worked in a boarding kennels - I didn't even know at the time what breed she was, just saw her and fell in lurve. Since then the only time I've been without one was when I was pregnant and having the kids - Becky (RIP) was PTS when I was 5 months pregnant, she had bone cancer in her shoulder and secondaries everywhere :( I waited 9 yrs in total till hubby started working from home then I would not be stopped ;)
But like other posters - any animal that's suffering or homeless with always find room at my house

Re trainability - I suppose it very much depends what you want to train for - general obedience/agility etc then IMO it would be a collie. For schutzhund the prey drive needs to be a lot higher so GSD/Rott/Dobes etc are perfect. Guide dogs are traditionally labs - I think for their dependability and steadyness, but hearing dogs can be anything....

I was reading a book just last night that sorted breeds into suitability for various tasks (how sad does that sound? LOL I need to get out more) depending on their reactivity, speed, mind set etc. If you're interested I'll find the list and send it on!

My favourite breeds are Canis Panther, Australian Bandog, and Bull terrer x ACD, Canis panthers (Black lab, Black Great Dane, Doberman, Staffie) are were bred for Personal protection, and i love Aussie Bandogs and Bull terrier x ACD, for their hunting ability
they'll lug BIG BIG boars! Dogs that match my personality basically, love to work, active, game with tireless stamina:p lol

Jared

ps-Doberman lover lol, i cannot say from experience, this is just something i've heard, but is it true, that the average Doberman will cower when facing a situation where the intruder or whoever fights back? this is actually a question lol, i'm not trying to make a point or anything:) of course upon hearing this, i was very curious, especially with the Dobes reputation and all...also is it true that a female Dobe, makes the better guard??

Canis_Panther
03-22-2006, 03:32 AM
Spotter, i actually believe any single dog can be obedient, with the exception of a very very small few...
It all depends on the trainer in my opinion, i've got a Bull terrier X staffie, and honestly, i cannot let him get away with anything, because he's so strong minded, i have to be constantly dominant, or else he'll take advantage of the smallest slip-up straight away, he is never spoiled, because i believe that is the worst thing for some individual dogs or any dog for that matter (just my opinion)..lol he's no less happy for not being spoiled, and it pays off in the end;)
So in conclusion i think, it doesn't really depend totally on the breed, but rather how the trainer handles the situation, some dogs are more stubborn. My dog is more obedient than the majority of Border Collies, Labs, GR's i've seen at my dog club.:D

I am partial to the Doberman of course and the Cairn Terrier. My Husband got a Cairn for me before we got married his name was Pogo and he was the greatest dog ever. He lived to be 15 years old and passed of old age.
As it stands now I love all dogs and when there is room at the Inn I make a run to the pound for another older pound dog that is running out of time.

3 goldens
03-28-2006, 12:04 AM
I think my name says it---golden retrievers. I grew up with and owned English Setters and pointers. Later I took in a lost irish setter and when i lost him 8 years later, got an irish puppy and had him for 12 1/2 years, losing him to bone cancer 9 years ago this summer. But before I lost Boots, we already had two two goldens.

I find goldens to be loving, great with kids, funny, thinks every time the door bell rings it is someone coming to see them, and then tey are beautiful. The only downside I have found is the shedding (you don't want dog hari on your clothes, do not come to my house) and cancer is a serious threat.

I guess it was just luck, but every dog I have ever had has been easy to train and they were all sweet loyal and got along with all dogs and people. Whoever lost the Irish i took in (never did locate an owner, no collar or tags) lost a wonderful dog.He was in bad condition, but so well trained, so loving, he had been owned by someone that really cared.

My Irish Setter pup was flown into Austin Texas from a kennel in Missouri. Not long after he was in tahe house he squatted and I said NO and took him out side. About 30 minutes later he went to the back door and stood there. That dog (he was 9 weeks old when I got him) NEVER ONCE PEED OR POOED IN THE HOUSE. What are the chances of that!

I love Chesapeake Bay Retrievers!! Many think they are just like Labs but curly, but they are quite different. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are the result of crosses with Newfoundlands, hounds, setters and water spaniels. They were bred in the early 1800's to be ducking dogs used by market hunters for retrieving waterfowl and protecting the day's catch. As a result, today's Chessies are hard, stubborn, protective, aggressive, one person/family dogs. They are also silly, loving, loyal, kid-friendly dogs.

I've only really been around Alaskan Malamutes, Akitas, and labs consistently... I can't really pick between akitas and malamutes. BUT, Maddi's a mal, so I will go with that for now :) .

I love Mals for their easy going nature and their inate subborness (which, admitedly, is very, very frustrating at times!). Maddi is literally, always happy.

I love Akitas for their regal beauty, sense of purpose, and their devotion to their family. My family's akita, Meeko, died a year ago September and I miss her reliability and sweetness. She would have given her life a hundred times to save anybody in the family and was always sure to bring us a present when we came home from somewhere. Talking about her brings tears to my eyes right now.

Akitas get a bad rap, but I just don't think they've been given a chance. If raised properly, I think, they are great dogs for the right people.

Mine has the be the Bull Terrier. We have 5 and love to show them at open and champ shows. They make great pets and protectors of the family. Our children (3 under the age of 5) love playing with them in the garden and they are sooooo gentle with the children and a little more playful with my wife and I, they seem to know that little people (children) are more fragile. Fun, Loving easy to train (with the right technique). Even our 4 year old daughter shows one of them in the Jnr classes at open shows. and our 2 year old boy is already helping with the training.

I'd say my 2 favorite breeds are the Beagle, because they're fun loving, great with kids, active and the list goes on. I also love American Pit Bull Terriers, they are fun loving, energetic, loyal, love to be always touching/cuddling with the people they love. This is a good question though, there are just so many great breeds out there that fit every and anyones needs/wants.

My favorite breed? Great danes. I have had danes for over 15 years now and will never even consider being without one. Yes, they have health problems, are expensive to own, maintain and provide care for, and generally don't have a long life span...but would I trade that in for another breed? NO WAY!
They give their love, loyalty and protection by the pound....Let's just say you get what you pay for!!

I can't imagine not having a dane around. They are protectors, comedians, lovebugs, snugglers, body warmers (share a bed with one, you'll see what I mean) and most of all, shadows. They don't like to be away from their humans.

I guess if I were to contemplate owning a non-dane, I'd go with Rottweilers (had one before, wonderful dog) and the Bernese Mountain Dog (wonderfully affectionate clowns!!).

And then all the rare breeds like Kuvaz, Akbash, Maremma, and Australian Kelpie. My dog is half eskie so I love American Eskimos as well. And any wolf-like dogs are beautiful.

Wow, tough question, cause I too, love all dogs. The dog with the most personality and intelligence I have ever owned is a Pug. Oh yeah, and she also snores and snorts the most too. I will always have a special place in my heart for Pits. They are wonderful dogs, but get such a bad rap. I hope to have another one someday. And the award for sweetest goes to my Catahoula mix.

Well, I have a three-way tie:p My first-love were Borzois, but I grew-up with English Springer Spaniels instead. So, for Springers:

*To me, their size is perfect. Small enough to share a double bed with. Large enough to fill a hug. Small enough to hold in your lap. Large enough for their bark to deter those whose intentions aren't legitimate.

*Their personality is enduring.... "Dignified" at times, "nutty goofballs" at other times.

*They're intelligent and quick to learn-albeit sometimes things you wish they hadn't. A sense of humor is a prerequisite to share your life with a Springer.

*I love their look.... Beautiful (bench-bred are particularly elegant), but certainly not wimps. They are also deceivingly strong!

*Last but not least, I always fall for their expression. Sweet and soft, with eyes that melt my heart.

I was 10 years old when I "discovered" sighthounds. What drew me to the Borzoi: They possess a quiet, elegant, graceful, peaceful, beauty. I also like that they're choosey as to whom they befriend (like me). I admire the breed's duality, active when given the chance to run; but content to lie beside you at home.

I did say three breeds, so last but not least is the Silken Windhound. This breed which I found out about just 2 years ago, combines what I've loved in my English Springers, and what I've admired from afar about the Borzoi for 20+ years. They combine all the sighthound qualities I love about the Borzoi, but are about the size of a Springer and with a bit more Springer-like attitude about training. Below is a photo I took of one of the first Silken Windhounds I met in-person in 2005....

I love so many, but have a Sheltie and a Greyhound.

Sheltie's are SO loyal, and protective. They're wonderful little dogs!!!

Greyhounds are AWESOME!!! They rarely bark, (ours has only barked a few times) and they LOVE people!!!
They require very little attention, and even make great apartment dogs for this reason. (It's not like at the track, when you see them running like crazy...they are total couch potatoes, and sleep a lot.) Daisy has brought us so much joy, and she LOVES to go bye-bye. (Our Sheltie isn't crazy about car rides.)

I have a jack russell cross yorkshire terrier and shes really nice and loving and she hardly barks, just when shes playing with her sister and there both 9 weeks old.

I love hounds! Mostly scent hounds I think. I love their long ears and beautiful eyes. My family had standard Dachshunds -- stubborn little guys, but adorably loving, ran like lightning, dug holes, and played their hearts out. Lately, the mini ones seem to be very aggressive and bark a lot! I wonder why -- too much inbreeding? My newest love is a purebred Beagle. Daisy is, from what I've heard from the people at our vet's, very unusual in that she is very calm and doesn't bay very much. She is so loving and gentle. (She did bring me some baby rabbits last summer and she injured 2 of them -- that was a little distressing but I know that's what she was bred for. No rabbits this summer, whew! But she thought she was the "cat's pajamas" when she brought them to me! We cleaned out some overgrown areas in the yard so the rabbits picked some other place this year.) She also loves kids and other dogs, so no worries there. I am very curious about Basenjis. Are they good family dogs? I heard they can be hard to train sometimes. They sure are good looking dogs, though. And, of course some of the best dogs are mutts!

Yes Im the same as you. My favourite dog is without doubt a German Shepherd, and Ive had them for over 30 years. In fact they are a part of me, a part of my life. They are Intelligent and sometimes to Intelligent for their own good, and have to be brought back to earth. I suppose thats why the Police etc use them.

The one I have at this particular time was the worst Puppy possible, and sheer hard work and she has turned into one of the lovelyiest dogs! Im lucky and when shes not well I get 43k on my lap for a cuddle! So yes one of the finest dogs around!

Cocker spaniel- Because I have had them all my life. They are beautiful, goofy dogs that always put a smile on your face.

Springer spaniels- own my first one. She's great. Alot like a cocker, but more medium sized and a bit more athletic and less coat!

And I love my mutts:p

My favourite would have to be a Lowchen. Alfie is such a clown. As a breed they are intelligent, loving, gentle, protective without being over the top. They love people and being with people. Their size is great too.... medium 33cm on the shoulder. They are great with other dogs too. There is a Lowchen in the US called Pistol who is champion at agility, flyball etc.
Pistol outruns collies etc and his owner/trainer Barbara is so proud of him.

Irish Water Spaniels - they are loyal, obedient, inteligent and last but not least - make me laugh. they are well named as the 'clown' of the dog family.

It would be easier for me to pick a breed I don't like. Because for the most part - I love them all and couldn't possibly choose.

I am especially fond of mutts though, now that I have one.

Love Dals, Dobies, GSDs, Pits, Newfies... I can't put any one above the other.

I have mutts, but my favourite breed for years now has been the Rhodesian Ridgeback. I used to look after a friends Ridgebacks (he had three of them!) & they are such beautiful & seemingly quiet dogs.

However, after much reading I decided that they just weren't the breed for me.

Just recently ran into a dog that looked exactly like a Ridgeback but was black! Apparently his father bred with a black lab & this was the only puppy out of 11 that ended up with the ridge.

I don't know why they have a ridge, but here is a photo which clearly shows the ridge that runs along their back. They were bred to hunt lions, so a formidable pooch!

My favourite breed is the Neapolitan Mastiff. Apart from their looks (which of course I adore), I love their loyalty, devotion, confidence and courage.

Hopefully one day in the not too distant future I'll be able to share my life with one of these very, very drooly giants. :D

Almost impossible to answer!I love all sorts of dogs, both large and small.I've had 2 mongrels in the past,a collie/GSD cross and an old english/spaniel cross.I now have a Cav and a Husky(of which i've wanted for years). They have all had their plus points as each individual breed has.:)

Hear hear on the ACD, Aus Dog! I have 2 beautiful ones, a 7 year old Blue male and a 4 year old Red female, and don't know that I'll ever own another breed of dog! They are beautiful, loyal, smart as hell and loving. My boyfriend (who is normally a cat guy, NOT a dog guy at all) has also fallen in love with them in the 6 months we've all lived with him. I told him they would get under his skin, and they have. We are all a big happy family now!

I thought I had posted a reply to this. My favorite breed is, no surprise, the Greyhound. I love the retired racers, but I'd also love to raise long-haired Spanish Greyhounds, the Galgo Espaņol. Their personalities are similar, but different. Here's a picture of a Galgo:

I love mixed breeds...in particular these combinations:
German Shepherd/Collie
Australian Shepherd/Border Collie

Mostly because our last dog was of the first mix, and our dog now is of the second mix.

We recently visited a county humane society/kennel and saw what is best described as:
Flat Coated Retriever/Black Shepherd - she was purely black.
Big dog and very pretty.

We generally like something that is between Cocker Spaniel size and German Shepherd.

Hard question to answer, Seems each breed of dog I've had has been the favorite for that time in my life, now that the body is wearing out, of course it is the Shih Tzu. Before that the miniature schnauzer, my hiking buddy, before that the "dingo". I really don't know what she was, was told a cross between wild dingo and queensland heeler, but Australia is a long way from rural MO. Whatever, she was the smartest dog I ever had. Without any formal training at all, she would herd the neighbors sheep off our property and back to theirs. She was a wonder working hogs but wouldn't go near a cow. (One charged her when she was a pup.)

I have had other breeds in the past, Terriers and German Shepherds. I currently have a Beagle. She is the perfect size and disposition. A little hard to train, but the love........ what can I say, she's a little sweet piece of heaven. We rescued her as a newborn at the human society and have had her 8 years now. Can't imagine life without her but if and when would definitely get another Beagle!

Rescues are my favorite breed, lol.
I don't have one or even two - I like traits from all dogs. I especially admire Border Collies for their intelligence, but I doubt I could provide the exercise and 'jobs' that one would need.
Generally I prefer medium to large sized dogs, but I have been charmed by small dogs before ;)

It depends for me on what I am judging it by,

personality wise it has to be a staffie, they are big clowns and when they open their mouth it looks like one big smile. Also they just love human contact.

Looks wise I would say the Alaskan Malamute - they are just really striking to look at.

If money and time was no object then a Great Dane - although i would need a large house

easy question gotta be the dogue de bordeaux (aka the french mastiff) for their character their loyalty and the little traits that make them them

MoJo
06-23-2007, 11:43 AM
I would have to say the Border Collie because I grew up with two and they are very loyal, dependant, and protective yet gentle with even the youngest of children. They are full of wit and truely do strive to please!! They are also so very intelligent, and easily trained. Just.. the worlds perfect dog in my opinion.

My two Border Collies are around 12ish years old right now, and still going strong. They 'race' everyday about a total of 3 kilometers... hard to describe what I mean by this it is just amazing to see. They do it with every vehicle that enters and or leave our property. They also smile big to greet everyone, yet remain protective when they get a bad vibe from someone. The vibe has to be very strong in order for them to act on it, and usually only when the youngest of the family is around. They truely take care of their family as if you were a part of their birth family. Mine only ever acted on their protective streak twice- when I was walking them at a campground, the most timid one actually stood infront of me, backed into my leg and started growling and snapping at the air infront of her when this huge guy walked past. This guy was carrying a knife, an has just assaulted his wife/girlfriend. (The police were there within minutes) but Cheyanne did not let this guy get close to me. I was about 14. The guy got very angry with her, and started to threaten her- and she leap to the end of the leash, snapping at him. I have never seen something look so vicious. The guy actually became frightened of her, and took off. Instantly, Cheyanne transformed back into the puppy-teddy- bear I knew her as, and jumped up on me whinning gently, and licking at me to insure I was safe. VERY comforting to know she would put her life for my own.

The other time we had a man come in to our driveway. I have no idea what got the dogs attention about him.. but they did not let him out of his vehicle... One put her paws on his driverside window, while the other crouched and snarled with her hackles raised. The man left without exiting his vehicle. Later that day we heard that someone had broke into someones house , and attempting a break in at another. He was cnsidered armed and dangerous. Had driving down from a city, and was trying to deal drugs, then was running low of gas so he ent to the nearest farm and started getting himself in a mess. Cheyanne and Sheba got that bad vibe from him.. and luckily (Being home alone and only about 12ish) he didn't have a chance to get out of his vehicle at our place. The girls were only just about 4 years old when that happened.

It really is great to know that they actually cared about me, yes. They had a hard life to start with, they were thrown in to a ditch when they were too young to be taken from their mother. Just little fluff balls. Assumed to be pure bred even. So we took them in and theytook to me the best because I was the only child. They followed me like I was their mom. I used to play games with them in the winter where I would bury myself in snow, and be really quiet. My parents said after only a few minutes after they had seen me for the last tme, they both got very anxious and galloped over and immediatly dug me out, one pulling on my arm, the other licking my face and trying to lay down on top of me, assuming to keep me warm. I loved to play games like that with them.

Not sure if I've replied to this thread but my absolute favorite "breed" are Mutts. I really have no desire for a pure bred dog. Unless, of course, one comes along my way that needs me.

As long as there are mutts/rescues/shelter dogs available, that's what I will have. :)

My favorite pure breds include:
Pit Bulls
Rottweillers
Catahoulas
German Shepherds
Black and Tan Coonhounds

and many more. ;)

For me it would have to be the Dogue de bordeaux.
They're very loyal, very protective (Griffen wont even let me have a bath in peace unless he's on guard next to me) and such a big baby.

They're not one of the easyest dogs to train, they do things in their own time and I'll admit they are kinda dumb lol. But you can teach them the basics, and I have heard of owners who do agilaty with their dogs although they arnt fast enough to compete.

Oh and I have to admit I love the slobber, the snoring and the grunts and snuffles they do :)

hounds - because I love their goofiness and barking. they are very loyal, too. I have a hound and he is awesome! :D

Rottweilers - because I love their gentle, but strong behavior. they are sweeties. I have a rottie mix and she is the best dog I have ever had. :)

Labrador retrievers - because this is the breed for me! I have had mostly lab mixes all my life and I love them. they are sweet, entergetic.. not sure if I'd have a lab pup again though. I want to adopt an older one. we have an almost 11 year old black lab mix and he's awesome. :D I love their goofiness and loyal and gentle personality. :)

Pit bull terriers - because they are the biggest goofballs in the dog world!
I LOVE their smiles. if you see a bully smile it's so contagious, you can't help but smile! :) I love how loyal and faithful they are and the big sillest goofballs ever! :D I hope to have one someday, rescued of course. :) I just love the breed. and they are so much fun to be around! I love bully breeds anyways.

Catahoula leopard dogs - because they are so, so pretty and unique. they are very loyal and love to work.

Siberian Huskys - because they are beautiful and so sweet. they are very loyal and awesome. :)

Golden Retrievers - because they are very loyal and pretty :)

Mutts - because they are the best. :D especially rescued mutts. they are very loyal and all of their personalites are unique.
