My fiance and I are new dog owners. we just got an 11 week old bichon and when it's falling asleep, it breathes hard and fast. It seems to go away after about 20 minutes but it freaks us out. Any suggestions?

Some pups do breathe hard , they are sound asleep. Especially if they been having " a mad 5 mins" . Hoever If you are worried then take him to the vets to get him checked out.

do you mean the breathing hard lasts 20 minutes? my dog appears to have dreams, as she suddenly starts breathing REALLY hard while shes asleep and twitches and even whines, but it only lasts about 10 seconds.

I've never had a dog who would breathe very hard while falling off to sleep. I'm not sure if what you're describing is normal or not. If concerned, a vet visit might put you at ease even if it is just to be on the safe side.

Have you ask yr vet about this?.
My dogs are deep sleepers but don't really breath hard unless they have run too much!.
I would ask the vet to check her heart, just to be safe.It might just be her but would ask him, anyway!.

Knuckles actually does breathe hard sometimes while he's falling asleep. Not for long periods of time though... I have just taken him to the vet for an unrelated matter and while we were there the vet checked his heart and lungs and told me he was very healthy. So, I don't think you should worry too much about it. As long as it doesn't last too long!
I wonder if this is a hypnogogic thing - pups seem to dream more than adult dogs (in my limited experience) as it is and this stage of near-sleep can be very prone to dream images in humans (sometimes called hypnogogic hallucinations.) It may be so in dogs, too. Though I wouldn't imagine it would last 20 minutes.
