In crate all day? about 8 hours

can a puppy stay in his crate for 8 hours and not hate it's owners afterward. We both work during the day, and he pees on the carpet infront of us, god knows what he'll do while we're gone....i feel cruel.

I have a corgi pup that I crate for 4-5 hours at a time... I wouldn't really wanna crate him for longer than that during the day. He is crated for 8 hours during the night though. What I do is go to work, come home 4-5 hours later for lunch, let him out, play with him, maybe do some training, and crate him again and go back to work for another 4-5 hours. Perhaps you could have a friend let him out for you in the middle if you can't come home yourself. >o.o<

Would you consider putting puppy in bathroom or utility room? :rolleyes:

If they're trying to potty train him that may not work as he might potty all over the bathroom because it's big enough that he can... >O.o<

And I never suggest paper training to anyone even if it's the bathroom, as it teaches them to go in the house anyway, but then when you want them to potty outside, you're suddenly changing the rules from what he knows. >X.x;< In my experience it doesn't work very well, but that's just my point of view...

i leave my 10wk old puppy in the kitchen its very big with radio on, iv got training pads which av been great, she sometimes makes mistakes but just think how long it takes to get kids out of nappies, she also goes on back garden sometimes to do her bussiness, i tried the crate but she hated it, it seems cruel to keep them in a small space for to long, no wonder they cry,good thing is i only work 2 days a week.

How old is your puppy? not that it really matters no dog should be shut in for ont 8 hours at a time never mind a puppy. If you both work full time dont you think the kindest thing would be to find him a good home whare he would have someone in with him all day.

I crate my puppy for 4-5 hours at a time while I'm at work. When I'm home, I wake up, take him straight out to go, play with him, feed and water him, then crate again for 30-45 minutes and take him out again. Then let him play again for an hour or so, do some training and crate again for a break. And then when I let him out, it's straight back outside to potty. There's a pattern here lol... There are absolutely no puppy pads in my house, and he's never had an accident on the floor or in his crate. He's only 12 weeks old.

He also doesn't cry, because he gets chew toys and his meals in the crate, because a crate is supposed to be his private spot and a positive place to be. Just FYI lol... >^^;<

And if a puppy DOES cry, and you let it out, you're teaching it that if it cries it gets to come out. Some dogs are slower to warm up to it than others. I'd suggest first putting treats in the back of the crate and letting the pup go in and eat them with the door open, and then praise etc. Then move on to a favorite chew toy, a bone or a kong stuffed with something good. Once he;s accustomed to his crate, you can try closing the door and sitting there next to him while praising. Try a minute first, then 5, and so on.

Crating is not "cruel" if it's done properly.

My suggetsion is to leave the puppy in the crate from when you leave work until lunchtime. That's about 4 hours, right? Then either you or a dogwalker or someone will come home and take the puppy for a quick run or walk. Then, maybe he can go in the crate again until you come home. As the puppy gets older it will probably become more trustworthy in terms of chewing everything. Also, you can confine it to a safe room with the crate (open) and food, water, and some safe toys. Confine the puppy to the room with a baby gate. :)

No, a puppy can not stay in a crate for 8 hours, that is down right cruel. crates wernt made to shuv your dog in for convienience when you cant be there, if you cant raise your puppy (by that i mean be there), you should seriously consider finding a home that can.

id never confine my dog to such a small area for so long, and alone!!!

You're only worried about what your dog thinks about you?? what about the dogs welfare!?!? do you have any idea the stress, anxiety and frustration your puppy may be going through? your dog could develop serious behavioural problems.

why did you get a puppy when you work all day? did you consider the implications to the the young, impressionable, social animal you are now responsible for?

i have an akita and when she was a pup we let ours stay in a big cage at night and if we went out during the day i spoke to someone about this as she peed everywhere in house and in cage they told us to get rid of cage and for some reason she stopped peeing and has never done it in house again they said she was doing it out of spite coz she hated the cage i hope this helps..:eek:

Yes 8 hours is too long and puppies need alot of attention and socialisation. I think the previous poster raises valid issues but also needs to be a bit less aggressive you may be inexperienced and looking for advice. Good Luck :):):)

Eight hours is a bit long for a puppy ... especially one under a year old. If you have a friend or someone you trust to take your pup out at least once or twice during the time you are both away at work that would be the best solution. Puppies need to get out at least every 2-3 hours to relieve themselves. Once a pup is about 4-5 months old they can usually hold it longer, but it's still a very long time to keep even an adult dog crated.

If that can't be done than I'd get one of those puppy pens and set it up in a safe area and put down some news paper or pee pads that the pup can use to relieve itself while you are at work.

Our dog is left in her room for 8 hours but at least she has a doggy flap to go outside and play if she likes to

Abbie, I think being left in a room with access to outdoors is very different scenario from being left in a crate for a long period of time. Of course neither are ideal, but yours is a far better arrangement, you dog can move around at will, and make choices about where to lie, sniff, eliminate, play, walk around, look etc which is much more mentally and physically stimulating than being confined to a crate.

Given the choice between having to put down some newspaper or a pad in a room, or leaving a pup to have to pee in their crate or hold on for an unreasonable length of time I would opt for the newspaper as the lesser of two evils.

To put your mind at rest, take a peek at their other posts, Puppy was 11 weeks old when this thread was started and you can see their last post was when puppy was nearly 1 year and they were fretting he was eating trash, so they obviously care alot about him.

Sounds to me as if they just didn't know, and the fact that they "felt cruel" meant they realised it might not be right so hopefully earlier posts at the time set them on the right track :)
