Decision about a Shih Poo

Hello,
I think Shih Poo's are so sweet. My husband and I are wanting one but, I have pretty severe allergies and was wondering if anyone knew someone with a Shih Poo that suffered fm allergies as well? Any helpful advice?

First of all Welcome to the forum!! :)

As I am assuming it is a ****zu crossed with a poodle, poodles are good dogs to have with having allergies. With it being a mix, I believe there is a chance it can get the coat from the ****zu or the poodle though. But before getting a ****zu/poodle x, You should know this is NOT a breed. It is a mutt. Do not go out and pay hundreds of dollars for one. You can find many in shelters.

However if you want a full bred dog I would suggest going with a poodle because they should not bother your allergies and you can know that for sure. Or I think possibly a bichon frise? I think that is another one that is supposed to be hypoallergenic (is that the term?) Anyways. I am not positive about the bichon, but someone on here Im sure can correct me if I am wrong.

Hi yer welcome;) . Definately go for a poodle , have a friend who went without a dog for 20 yrs as she had an allergy, got a poodle about 2yrs ago. And alls well:) . And you will probably pay far less for it than a so called "designer dog". LOL i loathe that name.:rolleyes:

I appreciate the welcome notes and the advice. I may have to check into poodles. I like the tiny ones. But my husband and I are pretty set on a Shih Poo, or Shihtzoodle. We could care less about the designer dog thing, we just fell in love with my sister in laws shih poo. Anyway, I appreciate all the replies, and Happy Easter!!

Be sure to check your local shelters for "Shih Poos" and "Shihtzoodles". They cost hundreds of dollars less there, the shelters are filled with them and similar mixes, and you'd be saving a life. Not to mention, you wouldn't be supporting a BYB or puppy mill, which are bad. >o.o<

Yes you are right - Bichons don't shed hair and are meant to be great for people with allergies.:)

though there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic pet...some dogs are definitely more allergy friendly. any dog that would shed minimally (all dogs shed some) should work for you. (think human hair ... we shed just not a lot) remember any dog that is "considered" to be non-shedding is going to require regular trims and lots of coat care.
i have a wheaten terrier, which is suppose to be a hypoallergenic. she weighs about 38 lbs and has a lot of personality. i have a standard poodle, and an afghan hound. the hounds will blow their coats after a litter or a heat otherwise are not prone to shed.
maltese, yorkies, shih tzu, poodles, bichons, westies, schnauzers, silky terriers, mi ki's, and of course the beautiful wheatens :) remember if looking for a mixed breed puppy that if one parent is considered a "shedder" the pup has a chance to be so also.
