Does anyone out there have any experiences with Sarcoptic Mange? I have a puppy that has it & it's suppossed to be contagious to humans and other dogs. My vet acted like it was not a big deal, but I kind of think it is. I would really like to talk to somebody who knows something about it.

How long does it take to cure it? My vet says the puppy needs to stay in isolation until its gone & there is a possiblity it could come back. I have 2 other dogs, how easy can they get it? Is there anyway that i can be sure that my other pets or family members won't get it? And how will it effect the puppy ( not being played with and everything) I know I have a lot of Qs, I hope you can answer some

In most cases the sarcoptic mange mites have a very short life span and prefer to live that short life on your pet but it is communicable so just be sure to was your hands/part of your body after contact. dont let him/her sleep on your bedding and wash his/hers daily. Using Frontline spray, or Revolution on your pup will get ride of the mange. Does this help you feel a little better?
Thanks:D

Yes it does make me feel better, thanks. My vet gave me dip to put him in, once a week for 6 weeks. He also got a shot and he goes back in 2 weeks for another. Are my other dogs in danger of getting it?

It really depends on the severity of the mange of how long it takes to go away. As long as your other dogs have frontline plus drops on them they SHOULD be safe not 100% though I would just limit their exposure to the pup but if the pup has been with the other dogs from day 1 then they prob have been exposed to it they may get it they may not. Your pup still needs attention just wash hands and if makes you feel better change clothes.

Is the sarcoptic mange that bad? They are at risk of getting the mange yes but don't stress if you cant always keep them separate

Thank you!
Our Bichon was diagnosed as having Sarcoptic Mange about 2 months ago. He started scratching at 17 weeks old and the vet told us he had allergies. We changed vets and tried different foods and steroids everytime we went which was on average every couple of months or maybe more. He was going worse and scratching his ears till they bled and sometimes his face would just be full of blood from the outside of his ears where he scratched them. He started having to wear an Elizabethan Collar 24 hours a day to give his poor ears a rest. He then started scratching very near his eyes and we went back to the vets in desperation and I asked if there was anything else we could try. He said we had three options - see a skin specialist, keep him on steroids for life or have him put to sleep. He then suggested doing an ear scrape for mites. He did the scrape next day and phoned to say they hadn't found any mites. They sent some blood away to test for Sarcoptes and two weeks later they phoned to say it had come back positive for Sarcoptic mange. We went back to the vets that night and they gave us a packet with 3 vials of Stronghold in and we had to put it on the back of his neck every 2 weeks for 3 weeks. He had his third treatment last week and he has now finally stopped scratching his ears and is an happy little dog again who wants to play and be mischievous. So he was being treated for allergies for over 18 months when all the time it was Sarcoptic Mange.
I asked the vet about us catching it and he didn't seem concerned at all - and we seem to have been okay - no bites or rashes or anything thank goodness.

It's nice to here good news! I glad your pup is doing ok, he sure is cute. After doing some investigating on the internet and talking to people that has had to deal with this problem, I think my vet may have over reacted & in turn made me over react. Our puppy is doing good and he has quit iching. I still wont let him around my other 2 dogs though. Thanks for your response!
I found this website very helpful and informative.http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/mites.html and here is another one about it http://www.parkvets.com/petsandvets-mitemange2.html
