Ok, So I have another breed I would like to know about. I keep posting these about different breeds, sorry.

After going through my breeds to consider thread on several forums, the dog I have found I am the most interested in is the Australian shepherd. I have done a little bit of research about them and plan to do lots more.

I would like to hear the experiences of everyone who has them and what they are like. I have heard they are velcro dogs, which is something I really like about them.

Also I wont be getting the dog until 2008, but I am interested in finding a breeder before I am ready to go out and get a puppy. I thought that way maybe I could visit the breeder and the parents and even see the litter from when they are born to when I can bring mine home. But I am not sure how to go about finding a breeder. I live in the Texas Panhandle and there are not really any cities here that have real dog shows or anything. Anyone have any ideas or know of any good breeders in or close to the Texas Panhandle?

Thanks for the website, I see there are several in Texas, the places I have heard of are far away, but some I will have to look up to see where they are. I will also look if there are any in ok, co, or nm that are close! Thanks!

I can't help you with local breeders.

Australian Sheppards are very smart dogs! We call them Coolie's in Australia.

Unfortunatley I belive they are a regular breed to end up at the animal shelters in Australia after surburban ownership due to their energy levels. People buy the cute little puppies, take them home. Don't worry about training - or exercise.

The dogs very quicky get bored and fustratrated, taking that fustration out on destructive habbits... ie digging, chewing barking.

My Mum had a coolie x boarder collie, he used to help bring the horses in every night - This dog (Bingo) is the only dog I have met who enjoyed thunder storms - he would bark at the thunder and jump up to the lightening.... crazy dog! He also would only bark cars when they left the house, didn't bother barking when they arrived.

We all loved him dearly - and he was so gentle with my todler.

The Miniature Aussies are downsized purebred versions of regular Aussies & are classified as a rare breed. The maximum height for a mini is the minimum height in the AKC standard (15"). Attached is a photo of a 15" Mini Aussie at a rare breed dog show earlier this year. The other dog is a Silken Windhound. They were competing in the "Alter" class which is for spayed/neutered dogs.

Thanks for that ............. like the Silken Windhound reminds me of a Borzoi.

So do you have breeders that just breed minis ???

The Silken Windhounds were what I was there for:p One husband & wife have both a Silken and a Mini Aussie, so they competed against each other for the "Alter" class. I'm hoping to have a Silken Windhound puppy this Winter! I am so excited, but have sooooo much puppy-proofing to get done. Haven't had a puppy for 9 years.

Oh, yes there are breeders who only breed the Miniature Aussies.

I've got an Aussie Shepard. Had her for 3+ year. Very smart and yes velcro. She started out as my wifes dog but now she's mine. She laying at my feet as I type:). They do need exercise daily and things to keep ther minds active. Puppy class to get them comfortable with other dogs and people is a big plus. Obedience, Agility, Frisbee they shine at all these. Make sure you meet the mom and dad at the breeder it might help you see what kind of personality they could have. I've seen several "High energy" Aussies that can't stay still. Maddie, after a good run, is very mellow. She loves to lay on my feet in the evenings. She is very " in control" untill we get ready to run Agility; then its "Game On":D

There can also be a huge difference in family lines. Aussies that come from show lines are usually a bit calmer and not as intense as working lines.

Zephyr my first Aussie came from some strong working lines and he was a very intense dog with high prey drive and a strong instinct to protect.

Odin is from predominantly show lines. He is very laid back and reserved. A delight to live with and while he does have some strong prey drive he is not anywhere as intense as Zephyr was.

Cadence is from show lines but several of her ancesters have herding titles, she is a lot calmer than Zephyr but can get very intense about things. She also shows a strong natural ability to herd things, blowing leaves, birds, and her housemate Odin ...

Living with an Aussie is a delightful experience, but you have to be smarter than the dog and stay on top of things with them or they find ways to get into mischief and enterain themselves. It's why they're one of the breeds that often find their way into rescue situations. They can be a challenge to live with so they need to be trained early and know who rules the roost.

Good luck in your search. I'm sure there is a wonderful dog out there for you.
You might even decide to go the rescue route there are a lot of young Aussies needing a good home.

Maddie is from more of a show line but she loves to herd. Kids, toys, rakes other dogs. She is pretty mellow but can really crank up the intensity when needed. She loves it when its time to water the yard, tell her to "leave it" and she'll sit still just quivering ready for the OK. Give her that and she's just flying around the yard chasing the water stream.
Lots O fun.

I walk, nearly everyday with 5 aussies and they are very calm.I mean to the point of being boring!.They are beautiful and loving.I believe that the over-excited aussies, you mean ,are the ones that are not exercised or trained enough. My golden never stops compared to them.
Here's a picture!.

Some of those Aussies are FAT, as far as I can tell from the picture (no offense intended). An exercised Aussie can be calm but they have high drive for work and are plenty playful. I can't imagine an Aussie being boring:confused:

I don't own one (although I was 2 seconds away from it!), nor do I have any experience with them, but they sound like amazing dogs. I've seen them do agility and flyball and they are really something. I would love to own one someday, too. :)

Aussies are far from boring dogs ... in fact they can be quite creative when they want your attention. Odin my male is quite mellow and laid back compared to my first Aussie who was like an energizer bunny. Cadence falls somewhere in between. I give her about 20 minutes of hard play like ball or frisbee and a several walks throughout the day. She's pretty calm after that.
