How many of you have dogs that have been rescued from dog shelters?

I'm just curious...I'm trying to convince people to rescue dogs instead of buying from breeders.

The dog I have now is from the shelter I currently volunteer at - so I was fortunatle enough to get to know her very well before formally adopting her. Poor girl had been there for 4 years. She's living a pampered life now!!!! And has adapted to it very well too!!! :D

The cat I have was adopted from a shelter in Australia - she flew over with my parents as they got sick of looking after her. She is now developing a strong Texan Twang. She is a wonderful cat - quite dog like, loves her people and gives kisses and cuddles all the time.

The dog I had in Australia was also obtained from a shelter - and she was marvelous.

It's almost like these animals really do appreciate their homes.

Can you perhaps just persuade your friend to visit the animals at a shelter? I know I am a sucker for those sad eyes looking at me through wire... :(

Been involved with shelters for about 18 years. Asopting a dog over one year is a great way to know temperment and energy level of the dog. Also any health issues. A dog from a breeder, one has to wait till it matures to get the true dog. Also, one has to determine work schedule, children, are they off the wall a puppy is not the best way to go. How many hours will dog be left alone , mom and dad have to be primary care takers. Children young and as they mature have other interests friends, sports etc.

I am an advocate of a shelter dog or a dog from a pure breed rescue

I am involved and have been with both areas.

I have two dogs and they are from breeders. But when i am older and move out of my mum's house (which will be ages!) i am going to buy all my dogs from breeders. I also like cross-breeds the best, they are as good as pure bred dogs and i think more people should breed them. The two dogs that i have at the moment are cross-breeds.

There are enough people breeding mutts right now because of some stupid fad. We don't need more. Why not save some cross-breeds from the local shelter instead of supporting a puppy mill or BYB?

I'm so glad people are rescuing dogs from shelters! I have a chihuahua/dachshund myself and I got him from a local shelter! I hope to be rescuing more dogs from there. I want to save them from euthanization!

Both my dogs came from rescues Al Doberman was 13 months and has been with us for 9 years Breagh the Rotti was 5 months and had been very badly treated and looked more like a little terrier than Rotti now after 5 months she looks fab. they are both great dogs and it is our good fortune we found them they give so much in return for being looked after. When I want another one I will be back to the rescues I would not go any other place for a dog.

Teagan is a shelter baby. She is one year old, and people are always asking if she is a lab puppy. I joke and say I have a miniature lab. She is definitley lab-something. Also, I would say over half of the people I have met at the dog park have shelter dogs. One woman has a labradoodle. It's cute, but we are always wondering "why?"

I also recently read in an article somewhere that it is becoming "trendy" to get a dog from a shelter. Hope it catches on!

My dog was not rescued from a shelter but he was rescued from some people who didn't want him because he shed "too much". I am very much for rescue. I got one of my hamsters from the local shelter. :)

i used to always get my dogs from a shelter...but due to a change is what we are doing with dogs now...(my daughter is starting to show) we now buy akc/ registered pups. three of the dogs come from breeders who only breed that breed. the afghan hound breeder also breeds poms. i needed to know the health and the history of the pup before making a purchase so we would have some idea what to expect when hitting the ring :)

I just adopted my 6 month old pup Maddie from the local SPCA. She's been great so far and I'm impressed by how fast she learns and what a great temperament she has. When I take her out people stop me and ask me where I got her because she's so cute and well behaved. Definitely will adopt from there again.

Shelters all the way!!!! Too many awesome dogs out there to just be ignored! I adopted Zoe from a rescue December 14, 2004. I was told they rescued her from a shelter in Ohio that was just about to euthanize her :( Thank God! I took her without further thought. Then we got Bear from a shelter about 45min from us. He was found wandering the streets with no collar, and it took them 2 weeks to finally catch him. Ppl apparently were throwing things at him, yelling at him. He was so traumatized, to the point where he wouldn't come out to meet potential owners. So they were going to euthanize him. I found him and we decided to take him, shyness and all :) He's doing so good now! All our cats are from shelters as well with the exception of Misty who I bought from a pet store. I know, I know. But she was so sweet. Oddly enough she's in the best shape of all our cats. Piper, I just recently rescued 2 days before her set date to be put down, which was August 28/05. Her mother had already been put down :(
My snake is the only animal I own from a breeder.
Man, do I talk a lot, lol.

i just read your post so went back and read the quote post... imo...there is nothing wrong with taking in a mutt and loving it but intentionally breeding a mutt is absurd. there are too many dogs and pups in the world needing homes without adding to the overpopulation by unknowledgeable breeders.

responsible pet owners spay and nueter their pets unless they are breeders, breeding for the betterment of the breed. not so the dog can have one litter, or so the kids can see what a birthing is like. responsible breeders take back their pups so that they do not end up in shelters or rescues.

i happen to own some pretty high dollar dogs and they are NOT being bred. they are pets first and foremost....they are all spayed and shown in areas of shows that do not require they be intact.

stepping down off my soapbox now... always ruffles a feather when i hear of unethical breedings...

a very good friend of mine... single mom all the kids are now gone, that wanted a smaller dog to keep her company. we found isabelle :) a chihuahua/dachshund cross. she was a 8 wk old pup who needed a home and a lady i knew called me and asked if i knew anyone looking for a pup...save it from going to the shelter. issie is now 7 months old and such a character. she is a spoiled little girl who has brightened the life and filled a void in a once very empty house. i think issie ended up with the best attributes of both breeds :)

the only thing i have against shelters is they hardly ever let you have dogs we were looking round shelters for a year and we kept seeing dogs that matched what we wanted exactly but they said that if we hadnt got this or that or havent had a dog that pulls before you couldn'thave one.

i think it is hard to determine if the adopter or the buyer had did adequate research of the breed or dog they were looking at. a very good example are sight hounds ... they are definitely not a dog that will work for many people. a lot of research needs to go into finding a dog that will match the lifestyle of the family.

we have four different breeds in our home... i have to say there are things i love about them all but they are all very different.

The thing is, shelters are big on forever homes. They have to be careful about WHO the dogs are adopted to. A lot of the time what was thought to be a good match, was wrong, and the dog gets returned to the shelter. A lot of the shelters I know of and have been to have a questionaire for potential owners to fill out. Once that's done, they show you the dogs that fit your answers. From there, you find your perfect dog :)

Lucky

I adopted Lucky with my fiancee on 17 march 2006. At the time we thought he awas a year old. Vet later confirmed he was only a year old. The owners dropped him off with his brother and a litter of puppies.

Lucky immediately fit into our family and has done wonders. Because I am in the military and gone a lot I sometimes wonder if my finacee will be alright, not anymore. Lucky has "protected" her twice already. He is not aggresive, but a loud bark from a 102lb dog is quick a thing.

Lucky is house broken and although he had never been on a leash before he learned to heel right away and is a pleasure to walk.

I will always adopt shelter dogs and cannot wait to get a second dog to join our family.
