My dog Hydi died in September. She was a 12 year old bichon frise. We had her from when she was 9 months old. She was the best little dog- she knew so many commands- you could point and say "look" and she would actually look where you were pointing. She walked on her back legs across the room, she rolled over, shook paws, crawled, plus many more things. She needed to be with us all the time, went shopping with us, went visiting , slept with someone at night. She was happy as long as she was with me, my sister, or my mom. She was our baby.
The worst thing was that Hydi was always in good health-she had a slight heart murmer, which is quite common in bichons, but that didn't affect her at all. One day we noticed her tooth was loose and slightly decayed. We took her to the vet, but he couldn't perform surgery because of the heart murmer. So she was put on medication, and then she stopped eating. She began to have trouble walking, and one night woke my family up with screams. She was rushed to the hospital where she just continued to scream over and over again for hours. The vet said it might be a pinched nerve, they would have to keep her for tests.
After a week of tests she came home, with no conclusive results. She wasn't eating, was visiting the vet almost every day so she could get fluids, and could barely walk. We found out she had an infection, and the meds weren't helping. We took her back to the hospital, where they said they might be able to try something new. At the end of the weekend they called us and said she probably wouldn't last the next 24 hours.
It was horrible when we had to put her to sleep, she could barely move she was so weak. My family feels horrible- we didn't want her to suffer so badly, but the vets kept saying to try this - or try that- and we didn't want to just give up on her if there was a way to save her life.
We miss her so much.
*Slightly cheerier topic, we got a puppy 3 weeks ago, a bichon named Elsa. She is a handful, but she brightens our lives. :)
