Hi JMelton and welcome :wave2:

Looks to me like the ultimate mutt. If you were to let all possible breeds of dogs mate and then have their offspring mate etc for several generations, you would get a dog that is brown, medium sized w/ curly tail and erect ears. I think the only differences beween the ultimate mutt and your unexpected guest is that the dog you have has black guard hairs, and the ultimate mutt has a white spot on the chest.

I might be able to see some German shepherd in there but I would not bet a month's salary on it. I bet she got out and someone misses her. Or do you think she was dumped?

Thanks everyone...we're going to go around the neighborhood this evening when everyone is off work to see if she rightfully belongs to anyone. Otherwise, since she is a good mannered puppy who is already house broken, doesn't bark at every little noise, and doesn't mind being alone for a little while, we'll probably just keep her. How much bigger do you guys think she'll get?

Aren't you a nice person for looking out for this doggy!

In order to know how big she will get you first have to figure out how old she is. You can do this by looking at the teeth.
http://www.ruralareavet.org/PDF/Physical_Exam-How_to_Determine_Age.pdf
Then once you know how old she is you can estimate the final size. Whatever a medium-to-large dog weighs at about 4-5 months you can double that and that is what they will weigh when full grown.

BTW be careful that someone does not pretend to be the owner who is not. If she does not go running to whoever claims to own her I would be suspicious. Sorry. I have no idea what kind of neighborhood you live in.

Our neighborhood is a mid-class neighborhood...we know most of our neighbors and they are all pretty nice. Most people know us by face and wave when we see them so all should be good...thanks for the link...I think she's about 1 year old. Thanks for all the info. and help!

Whatever kind of dog she is, she sure is pretty! ( i love mutts ) She does somewhat look like a German Shepherd/ Labrador mix. Are you going to keep her around? Strange that she was in your garage :) Hopfully you will either find her owners or keep her ;) Welcome to the forums

Oh she's gorgeous - someone must love her, but if she doesn't find her owners I think she's fallen on her feet with you.

Hey, thanks everyone...my wife was planning on getting a puppy this Summer, but looks like fate has changed that plan. I rode around today looking for the owner, but no one is familiar with her. I have a feeling she may have been dumped. What kind of food should we purchase for her at the store? We have not yet owned any animals besides a few fish.

Welcome to Dogforum.org.:)

Congrats on your new addition ! Very pretty young dog! :D

I always suggest holistic dog foods, they are more expensive but in the long run you feed less and it is far more healthy for your dog.

What price range do you want to spend on dog foods ?

What a pretty dog! Lucky for you getting to keep her. We spoil our dog with specially ordered "organic" dog food. Sometimes I think it is crazy, but we love her.

Are you in the US ( Has to do with what is available in your area)? Do you want to feed canned or dry or even BARF diet (don't laugh) it is a special home recipe...Dobe can fill you in on the specs if your interested? Premium brands are better quality than local grocery store brands..as Doberman said....you can feed less and get more nutrition from the premium brands...stay away from Science Diet....nothing really good with their brands and alot of vets will recommend it...they receive kick backs from the manufacturers for their recommendations but it isn't a good food source in mine and a lot of others here opinions......

We have a Shar-pie mix that looks very much like the dog in your picture. Nose the same, coloring very much the same but his tail not as bushy. When he was a pup he was nothing but wrinkles but now at age 4 wrinkles are all gone just some lose skin around the neck.

Do you know what goes into a bag of regular cheap dog food ? That is the point of it Gemizza... good nutrition equals long life and happy healthy dogs.

If you are in the UK, I swear by Burn's, I have tried others but don't find them as good personally.

cheap since when was dog food cheap. i just do not think it is neccessay to buy organic food for your dog that is my opinion so lets leave it there.

pets at home biscuits reggie loves them with a bit of iams chicken flavour sauce on them and then butchers tripe meat he loves that. we have tried loads of different foods but thats his favourite.

Yes, of course. I believe that a dog should be able to have the best shot at life as possible and that mean holitistic foods to high quality foods. I would not eat junk food so why would I feed it to my dogs ? My dogs are like my kids they get the best I can give. But that is me.

IAMS is not a good food niether is Science Diet and Purina. These are the dog foods that are available at your normal grocery store or Dept store.

Check out a Pet Supply store like PetSmart and have a look at the mid to high grade dog foods. Eagle Pack is one of the better foods and there are many more out there. Look for dog foods that do not have any Meat by-products, animal digest, animal fat, tallow, these are all ingredients that are unidentifiable and could be any kind of animal right down to pets.

I feed RAW ( BARF ) if you want to know more about that I can help you.

BTW have you named her yet ?

Listen Missus, If you don't care about what food you feed your dog, perhaps you'd be happier with a dog food which hasn't been tested on dogs? Or are they dogs, so what? You buy meat for your dog, if its not organic you've contributed to cruel factory farming -

Grrrrrr. Canine's health problems have increased dramatically - and some conditions can be attributed to additives, pesticides, etc. in dog food.

I feed Burns organic, with the addition of fresh fish, vegetables, and any scraps which are suitable.

First of all she looks very well cared for. You must do everything possible to trace her owner, put up posters of her everywhere around town, pet stores, library where ever. I'd be devastated if someone just decided to keep one of my dogs. Have you had her scanned for a chip or checked for a tattoo?
She is fully grown judging by the lack of knuckle.

Hey, I reckon she's collie X GSD, a cuite too. Legally you need to notify your local police, dog warden & recue, as they are legally bound to keep any strays for 31 days before they can rehome. Dogs unlike cats are classified as possessions, so the original owners ( if they care they have lost a beautiful pup & not dumped her ) they can press charges of theft.

I hope she's happy & ends up in the right place though no matter where it is.

The coloration, light build, coat and ruff have me thinking a Malinois cross, rather than GSD. Beautiful dog.

I would guess a Shepherd mix based on the similar coloration pattern to Maggie who is also a Shepherd mix.

As for food.. we went with Nutro. It has the least amount of fillers of the mid-range foods and also has had some of its claims backed by the FDA.

http://www.c-four.us/puppy/puppy3.jpgHi josh, it looks to me to be an old english ratter. This breed was in fashion during the 70's, as noddy holder was often seen with one by his side.
They are rarely seen outside of shows these days, so I expect that the owner is frantic looking for her. Worth a lot of money. A pedigree pup fetches around £1500 sterling. Hope this helps.
