I ain't got one yet

I have not got a dog yet but i would like some help choosing one

I had a Chocolate Lab and i trained him well but he was my mums dog and she woulden't let me take him when i left home and that was when i was 16 i am now 21 and got a family of my own and moving into a property.

So i want a dog that

Is good with kids and my missis
Has good staminer so i can take it on my daly run
Will protect me my family and home

My friends perants and nabours keep rottweilers and said to get 1 of them and i realy would like 1 because they are well behaved and beautiful dogs but i have herd stories about them flipping and attacking ther owners and children but the people i know that keep em say it unlikely that this will happen and they have never had any trouble and to be honest i cant see it because they seem pretty placid and there kids run aroud and the rotties just ignor them and i'll sit cuddleing them and playing with them and they are gentle giants but still i need a bit of advice cuz i realy dont wanna c my little lad or missis hurt or even me for that matter.

why dont you read up on sum breeds you may think youd like? rotties are good dogs but its really the way you train them of how they will be when theyre all grown up. i know a lot of people who own rotties and they say there great dogs too. my dad said hed never let me get one cause he heard they turn. but n e how, why dont you read up on them?

I think there is a lot of things you need to consider, like How much room do you have? Do you have a large yard? How much time can you spend excercising? Training? Do you have time for a puppy? Maybe you should adopt an adult? Also I believe you should ask the missus and make sure you both agree on the kind of dog...does she like rotts? Unless of course you want to end up like me and mak with 4 dogs so we can both have the kinds we want :)

Anyways, I dont know a lot about Rotts, but you will definitely have to spend lots of time training, as with most any breed. But also be aware of your insurance, some insurance wont insure your house if you have certain breeds and I believe rotties may be on some of the lists....

Is this the only breed you have considered? Is there any other breeds that you like? Any specific requirements? Grooming, size, excercise, trainability, etc?

I know what i need to do to keep a dog like that i just wanna know what u people recomend as a good for the things i have explained and if a rottweiler is a good choice or not

Well I know most labs and retreivers are good with kids and great for going running...

Do you plan to get a pup from a breeder or adopt? If you go into adopt a dog you can usually find out the temperaments of the different dogs make sure they are good with kids, etc.

Something like a border collie maybe....they need lots of exercise though, but I believe they are somewhat reserved with strangers til they get to know them, so I think they are somewhat protective of the family.

Im trying to think of some others, but right now I am supposed to be doing hmwk so trying not get too distracted....lol

labs are good dogs to have with children and ive heard they are pretty protective over it family. staffonshires are heard to be mean, but the truth to them are theyre really sweet. ive read on them and it said they were very protective and they love kids but they may not get along with other dogs.... gsd's are great!!!!!the gsd is heard to be very protective over its family and its yard.
