View Full Version : Fleas
I'm wondering how frequently a dog gets fleas. Is there a decisive way of preventing them because I absolutely hate them. If it wears a flea collar will that guarantee no fleas?

Fleas can come from your yard, a neighbor hood walk, contact with other animals with them (such as you bringing them home after petting another dog), etc.
Flea colors don't really work, and can sometimes cause severe reactions.
I, personally, would get either Advantage, Frontline, or Advantix.

LOL you can NEVER guarantee no fleas! They're clever little creatures, apart from being able to jump 60 times their own height (ie onto any passing animals) the eggs stay dormant for up to 7 years and will be re-activated by the footsteps of a tasty cat or dog!
I use frontline every 3 months on mine - both cats and dogs. The house gets treated by Nuvon spray every 6 months unless I have a problem.
Feed garlic capsules (one a day) which will also help get rid of them.
Some people say use odourless garlic, but that baffles me a little - I always thought it was the aroma of the garlic seeping through the skin pores that got rid of the little bleeders...
eek! I suspected that might be the case. Thanks for the product recommendation, I'll definitely be getting some of that in.

Go and get it from the vets - anything over the counter just isn't strong enough :)

Baffles me why we still have to go to the vets for Frontline:rolleyes:

You don't. Petsmart, Petco, and Pet Supermarket sell Frontline and Advantage. The Drs. Foster & Smith website sell both of those and Advantix. I got my Advantix shipped from them when I was in FL and it worked as well as the Advantix I got from the vet.

We do - UK!! Argh. It's still a Vet only remedy. I believe we can get a prescription and then 'go shopping' so to speak, but quite frankly I think my vet just might be insulted by that....so I have to get it there. And it costs a fortune!!

Small amount of crushed garlic or a small amount of garlic paste added to your dogs food once a day is a good natural flea repellent.
Is that ok for puppies as well. Or is garlic too strong
