Vital, at least in my house.
Maddi's a little less than 18 months and, on top of that, is a mal (which like to make their own games with things you wish they wouldn't). I'd be too afraid of coming home to a trashed house... or worse, a dead cat(s) or dog... or both.
I don't think they are always necessary, as the Mal and Akita I grew up with were never crated, but I think they are extremely helpful.

Well with puppies and especially stubborn breeds, I think it helps. But personally I never needed it for Zoe. She wasn't always so well-behaved. But she was never destructive while we were gone or anything. With Bear though, I can't tell you how many things he's destroyed. He had a real bad case of separation anxiety. But he's ok now, and we never crated him. My sis did keep him in a small corner of our room, though. Of course he always managed to find a way out lol.

Vital. They reduce accidents and destruction VASTLY if they are used properly.

I agree totally. And gives the dog a safe haven to go to.

Essential as far as I am concerned For one things stops them from having access to electric cables and plugs. It was always my fear that they would chew throught cables and electrocute themselves.
Also it is their place of safety and relaxation if used properly. Mine all love them.

Especially usefull when bringing a puppy home whare another dog is already esablished. Crate is a safe place for puppy and gives the older dog a bit of peace till puppy calms down.

I have a grate but i also have a dog gate which i find really good, as i have a 10wk pup(Barney) & 10yr old bitch(Holly),i put the gate between the kitchen & the dining room to give my older dog a break from my grazy pup.I also keep them apart at night & when i,m out in the day.

The gate is fine for the smaller breeds but with a large breed like mine they would just jump over it so the crate for me is a better option.

all my dogs know kennel up. they are all placed next to each other and they all go to their own kennel. very helpful if it is wet and muddy when they come in or if someone comes over that is a little afraid of dogs.
the trick is not to abuse a kennel or a crate and it will be a safe haven for your dog as well as a life saver for you at times :)

Its a hard one to awnser given the options, I would say it totally depends on the dog. I never had a crate when I got Angel and he was fine easy to train and well behaved. However when I got Misty I ended up getting a crate for her as she can be a total nightmare at times and will chew everything in site if left unattended, even for short periods.

i've never used a crate , but then i only ever have a new pup that i have bred myself. However have started using a pop up kennel at dog shows which is a godsend.
