Origins: The Bullmastiff came about through crossings between the bulldog and the Old English Mastiff. The dog was used as a very effective guard dog and gameskeeper's dog - in fact, it was often known as 'the gamekeeper's dog'. A strong animal, but highly amenable to training and correct handling, the Bullmastiff was officially recognized as a breed in 1924, although it had been in existence well before that date.

Appearance: A powerful and symmetrical dog with a smooth coat. The head has a square skull and a deep strong muzzle. the skin on the head becomes wrinkled when the dog is aroused. The eyes are hazel or darker in colour and of medium size. Ears are V-shaped and folded, and help to accentuate the impression of squareness to the skull. The neck is very muscular and almost as wide as the skull. The body is short with a broad chest and a straight back and carried on moderate length, powerful legs. The tail is long and tapering.

Coat: Short hard and lying flat to the body. Colours may be any shade of brindle, fawn or red.

Size: Height: Dog 25-27 inch Bitch 24-26 inch
Weight: Dog 110-130lb Bitch 90-110lb

Characteristics and Temperament: A powerful purposeful dog with an independent nature, the Bullmastiff is not recommended for the novice dog owner. It is reliable, faithful and affectionate, however, and makes an excellent guard dog. The Bullmastiff can also cover the ground with remarkable speed and agility for a dog of such commanding size and build.

Just thought I would give a post about this breed as it was a breed I would of like to own. They are fantastic and I have a few friends who own them who say they are wonderful. This is from my dog breed book hope it makes for intresting read.:)

The person who owns the land next to where i keep my horse has 4 bullmastifs.
They are lovely dogs really gorgeous but VERY territorial. They bark and jump at the gate whenever anything goes past- which is very scary for horses etc. However because nobody wants the dog destroyed no-one will complain about them.

Anyway not trying to be negative, just telling you my experience. I think they are beautiful dogs and are really good with the lady's kids and terrier :)

Why are they so misunderstood also? Are they bad dogs, hard to train and be social? I love the tough look, I am a big person dog lover. I just do not understand why most I read or see are kinda nastey
