View Full Version : English Bulldogs
We were looking at English (or British) bulldog puppies online yesterday, and they were soooo expensive. We have Jack Russells and the price gap is huge, couldn't believe it. I just can't understand why bulldog puppies can reach such a high price. I think the highest I saw last night was £2,000 but the average was probably £1,400 for 1 puppy.   (JR puppies are between £80 and £200 just for comparison)
Maybe someone can justify the price?

hi a stud fees is the price that you pay to the owner of the male dog for his "services" LOL

also Bea Jack Russells aren't a breed as such. Parson Jack Russells are.

My son bought Gladys his bully when he was 13. When he went to college and came home dad couldn't bear to part with her Dustin ended up with visitation rights. LOL. Gladys will be 13 this year and there have never been any health issues :)

They are just a more expensive breed, they're rarer, harder to breed (c-section are quite common), and I think have smaller litters than jack russels. Jack russels are really common in the UK, and often don't come with any papers (as they're not recognised by the KC) So I guess this makes threm easier to breed and get hold of, so cheaper pups.
It does seem ridiculous when you think that bulldogs only live to about 7 years old, yet cost so much!
I dont want to patronise you:) , but think i should say that you need to check the parents breathing of bully pups, coz I think they should not be constantly weazing or sumink.
best of luck, I know they're expensive but how can anyone resist a lil wrinkly puppy, sooooooooooo adorable!!!:D

a few more tips are..
if I was you I would rather pay more for a bulldog that comes from selfbirthing lines. They usually cost a bit more BUT then you often get a healthier dog. a girl I was talking to (my hubby wants an eng bulldog) her dog was on the 14th generation of selfbirthing and they had VERY little problems in their lines BUT the dogs are close to 2000 dollars. I am prepared to pay that though if it means I get a healthier pure breed a longer time, also it was good showlines etc. They even had been competing in obediance with fairly good results. So it was nice lines period. So look that up PROPERLY and talk to different breeders to really get a good bulldog.
The females also are prone to actually passing away during pregnancy/birth, and/or need c-sections. My neighbours bought a male, and plan on breeding in the future- I tell them they are crazy because of all of the risks. Here the females cost about $5000, and to spend that kind of money, get attatched to the girly, and then have her pass away during pregnancy? I couldn't put myself through all fo that!

 Being a Bulldog breeder I'll let you know some of the hiccups the breed often stumbles across.
They are a man made breed, and over the years they have gone from being a terrier type, to a short ball of muscle (or fat in my guys case)
The show scene got a bit carried away, and started asking for flatter faces -causing breathing problems, shorter barrels - making it harder to carry larger litters, top heavy - making it harder for bitches to support males whilst mating (hence many people use AI now) roach backs - harder to pass pups as they have to go up before coming out (reason for so many c-sections) short screw tails also prevent some natural whelpings, as dogs use their tails for leverage whilst in labour.
So expenses occur because of Csections, AIs, Stud Fees, Microchipping, Vaccinations, Registrations, and the labour put into rearing the pups for the first 8 weeks.
I have both natural whelpers (video proof if needed) and bitches who need Csections....yet the dogs that do better in the show ring, arent so good at producing, and the self whelpers would be laughed out of the ring:confused:
Unfortunately the breed may become extinct if breeders get too carried away.

You also forgot to mention the "chav" factor. English people here will know what I mean. These are the type of people who associate bull breeds with being hardmen. They use bulldogs, bull terriers, pit bulls, mastiffs etc as proof of their masculinity and hardness. Prices can be inflated to deter these buyers or to deliberately profit from them - depending on the motives of the breeder. And I mean backyard breeders here, not responsible, caring breeders.

Serious? I would never look at a bulldog owner and think anything about the owners masculinity. They just don't seem the type of dog to portray that to me. My son owned two and they were cute and loving they reminded me of big cuddly stuffed animal.

Oh yes dlambertz, a lot of chavs here use dogs like these to make themselves look tougher towards others and gain power in gangs etc. It's pathetic really but does happen here. However I thought that was common all over the world?

not so much bulldogs as pitbulls... the english bulldog is not used in Sweden as a macho dog, there it's more concidered an old man dog...
The pitbull, presa, cane corso THAT is another story..

They can bite and will.!! They are not an old mans dog, they are lovely pets high priced also because of not many in a litter also. They are a ball of muscle, strong as heck, stubborn, hard to train, but make wonderful pets. I had no problem with mine. She fought to live to her last breath, yes they have breathing problems, this is what made me decide TPTS. I did not mind paying $1500 for her...

I underestimated Bulldogs as being lazy and couldn't hurt a fly but I watched an episode of the dog whisperer and man can a Bulldog jump when they want to, they don't look like it but they can jump for your throut and if they do get a hold of you they can cause damage.
I learned a lesson not to underestimate them from that day on

we have a bulldog and paid 1500 canadian for him and now have spent 2000 in vet bills, shots and just bulldog problems. but he is a good pet and you dont see them around that much. yes i agree the price of them is high but if you want a pet that is lazy, cute not running around that is grate with children even a 3 yar old that dose everything to him and has never bit her or anything then bulldog all the way. it dose get very costly so all i can say is make sure that you have the Health Guaranty it is a little more to get the dog but it will be less costly in the end. like i said 2000 canadian in vet fees and he is 4 month old and no health guaranty. but we love that Dommi dog we have and would not trade him for anything!!!!!

Sheplovr....you say they are hard to train.......not at all, with the right owner they can prove to be very obedient. I have competed in both Obedience Trials and Agility (although slightly slower than most breeds:rolleyes:) I have won sashes for the highest scoring dog on the day with 3 of mine.
I think they are more like."Ahh I'm too cute, if I pretend I didnt hear, I might just get away with not doing it:p"
Heres a short video of one of my 10 week old pups, "SPEAKing" on command (excuse the silly voice...thats my lets get excited and work voice:D

They are wonderful dogs. They have always been one of my favourite breeds and it breaks my heart that because of show breeding that they have so many issues now. I just hope and pray that all you good breeders out there can begin to undo some of the damaged caused by show breeding and get the bulldog back to its traditional terrier type.
They are lovely dogs. Thank you littlebullydog for sharing that wonderful video. You reminded me why I love the breed so much.

Do you know her Prefix, or sire and dams name? or even the breeders name? Its possible I may know the litter;)
Im guessing she is only around 2 weeks or so, given that you still have to wait so long...but it will be all worth it in the long run:D
What are your plans with your Bulldog, simply a pet/companion or do you wish to show or even breed, sometime down the track?
Sorry about all the questions...almost seems like I have a 'badge', but when it comes to Bulldogs, I just love hearing all about them:cheers:

That IS a cutie!!! I am so jeallous!!!!!
and littlebullydog, I have to say, I would rather take a pup from a self birthing "ugly" dog that is healthier and less issues than a pup from a show dog... if I am gonna pay that amount of money I want the dog to be around for a while ;)
I loved the stitch video :D woof!!

Awwww reminds me of our little Brita when we brought her home so small and cute. She slept in one of my old slippers, she stuck her head far as she could in it. I have photos, but not digital ones, will have to scan some in. If they just did not have so many skin issues I would have another?:)
