WHAT IS PARVO?

Parvovirus (called 'Parvo') is an infectious virus that attacks mainly young dogs, but all dogs are at risk. It is a fast acting, ruthless virus that can kill a puppy quickly if left untreated.

HOW DOES MY DOG GET PARVO?

Dogs usually become infected with Parvo when they come into contact with contaminated faeces. Parvo deposited from these faeces can survive in the environment for over a year even in freezing temperatures.

WHAT DOGS ARE AT RISK?

Young dogs (less than 6 months of age) are mostly at risk, although older unvaccinated dogs may also become infected. Vaccination against Parvo is most important in the early stages of a dog’s life.

CAN I GET INFECTED WITH PARVO?

No. Parvo is not transmitted from dogs to humans.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF PARVO?

Dogs with Parvo show signs at about 4 days after infection. These include:
Bloody diarrheoa
Vomiting
Loss of appetite
Depression

CAN PARVO BE TREATED?

Parvo may be treated by your veterinarian. Treatment involves antibiotics and fluid, and sometimes plasma infusion to replace lost fluids. Early detection is critical for the survival of the dog.

HOW CAN I TELL IF MY DOG HAS PARVO?

A veterinarian will look at your dog’s medical history and then its clinical signs before deciding whether to conduct a Parvo antigen test.

The veterinarian takes a small sample of faeces to use in the test and you can receive a result during the course of the consultation.

YOUR VETERINARIAN CAN TEST FOR PARVO WITH THE AGEN PARVO ANTIGEN TEST. THIS TEST WILL PROVIDE AN ACCURATE AND QUICK ANSWER TO YOUR DOG'S PARVO STATUS.

WHAT CAN I DO IF MY DOG HAS PARVO?

There are two key things you can do if your dog is showing signs of Parvo infection.

Take him/her straight to your veterinarian.

Remove all traces of the virus by:
cleaning the dog's living environment with a disinfectant from your veterinarian.

Thanks for the great info! One thing, though, my (human) friend did get Parvo. I don't think it was from animals (she did work for a vet, though...). She laughed and said that she loved dogs too much- she even got their diseases!

Yep, the doctor called it Parvo. She was very fatigued for 2-3 months and had muscle aches. She's fine now, but still jokes about it!
