Maybe there could be a thread for books suggestion and review? They have to be dog related of course. Maybe someone could post one book a month and others can give their reviews or whatever? The books can be about anything, such as training, fun stories, sad stories, etc. Even photography books.
What do you think?

Sounds like fun. I tried it once this past summer but I guess there were not enough members who had read all the same books. Any suggestions as to the books?

We need some books that are new to everyone. I think it would make it more enjoyable. I think stories about dogs would be the better way to go. That away there won't be much debate. What do you think?
Has anyone read Tails from the Bark Side by Brian Kilcommons? It seems like a fun and light book. You can look it up on Amazon.com.

OK we have a couple of suggestions:
Sheplovr suggested a training book by the Monks of new Skete
One of these? http://search.half.ebay.com/new-skete_W0QQ (some of their books are on eBay for real cheap)

I would be up for a dog book of the month club. If we can agree on a book to start with I'll order one up for myself and maybe in a week or so we can have a thread going.

I've read the both the "The Art of Raising a Puppy" and "How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners" by the Monks of New Skete.
These are both excellent choices.

I just ordered the book "Marley & Me, Live & Love with the World's Worst Dog" by John Grogan. I've heard lots of great things about this book & just couldn't wait any longer. I'll be chomping at the bit waiting impatiently for the regular mail shipping. LOL

You will enjoy it. The guy can really write. I wonder whether Marley was really a "demon dog" or whether it was training, but maybe we can discuss this aspect in our "book-of-the-month club cyber-meeting?

I ordered it with "free shipping" but that means I'll likely wait a week or two until it arrives. I hate waiting but, hey, free is free, right? I'm looking forward to it as I have heard nothing but great things. I doubt I'll learn much from it but sounds like a very enjoyable read.
John Grogan & his family were on an episode of the Dog Whisperer recently with their new lil Lab monster (who was eating their chickens).
I finished reading Marley and me a couple of weeks ago it is brilliant :applaud: ,
i cryed the last 5 chapters, it get very sad.

Yes... if I can wiggle in here.. there is a good bok..
Dominance fact or Fiction by Barry Eaton.
It is a revolutionary book and truly really good in how dogs mentallity actually works. Id like to hear others opinion on it.
(if I did not misunderstand the thread I was supose to get a book up right?)

Yes, maybe one of these days if we get enough people who post about the same book we can get a discussion going.
I now have "How to Speak Dog" and "How Dogs Think" by Stanley Coren.

I haven't had a lot time to read any of these books with work, school, training at the shelter, and a new puppy! I am going to florida tomorrow, for a much needed break.
I just ordered Bone's would rain from the sky by Suzanne Clothier (sp?).
From Baghdad with Love was a beautiful easy to read and happy story.
I have also been reading Search and Rescue Dogs, Training Methods which is also amazing not just for the SAR side of things but because it gives alot of suggestions on training.

I've been off the forum for a long time, did the request for a section to talk about Dog Books ever go through? If not, I really hope admin will consider it, because I think it would be a great idea :)

I just read a book called "Chicken Soup for the dog lover's soul" and I loved it! I smiled at each and every story. They were all really sweet.
I also recently read "A women's best friend", it tells storys of Women authors and their dogs. It was KIND of boring but it was cute over all.

I LOVED Marley and Me. Those people were clueless how to teach a dog, but it was truly a delightful book, so well written!
I also loved If Bones Could Rain from the Sky.
I read The Monks of New Skeet a long time ago, maybe 20+ years ago and liked it then, but have a different philosophy now and don't agree with their methods so much.
My all time favorite and probably the most important dog book ever written (to get inside a dog's head) is Culture Clash, by Jean Donaldson. I highly, highly recommend that.
There are so many good books, too many to list. But another good one is Patricia McConnell's For The Love of a Dog. Another one of hers is The Other End of the Leash, also very good. She's a good writer.
If you have a dog reactive/aggressive dog, Click to Calm, by Emma Parsons is excellent.
I enjoyed the little book, On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals, by Turid Rugaas. It's a tiny book and you read it in one sitting, but very good.
I've been eyeballing that one, Monkey, Dominance, Fact or Ficton. I have read some articles by him and totally agree....and have wanted to read that book. It looks like a good one. And I've heard good things about it.
The Power of Positive Training, by Pat Miller is another.
There are so many good ones out there now.
