We take our dogs out for around 1 hour each day for excericse.

For a Peke and Chow, it may be overkill. How long do you take yours out for?

I try and take mine out for half an hour, by then my dog wont walk any further because her feet get too cold in the snow.

Were suppose walk our dogs? J/k, lol. I don't walk my dog b/c last time I did he ran away and pissed me off. My mom only takes our dogs Charlie and Bubbles out, my other dog(James) stays in the backyard since he goes out of controll. Good thing we have a big backyard.

We usually take our for two 20-30 minute walks a day if she doesn't otherwise get some serious running time. We have a nice dog park about five minutes from home, and one of our good friends has a pup and a fenced in yard. We prefer those options over walking, but walking does the trick when the other options are available/convenient.

Well, when my Neighbor's are gone, I usually take their dog to the lake and back, about 3/4 of a mile round trip.. Though It does depend on the type of dog.

Ive got an Australian Kelpie and he is a cattle dog and needs about 5 to 10 kms a day to keep him happy, even then he wants more, Ive seen him move about 100 cows 35 kms to another farm when he was younger. They will keep going till they drop dead, you have to tie them up on a farm to stop them from running too much, they need a rest every now and then.

We take our dogs horseback riding, they run along side or up ahead of the horse.

In the winter it can be too cold for them here even with their coats on. So on average when it is cold here they get out twice to three times a day and for about 10-20 minutes each time. BUT when it warms they are out a lot longer. If is it really cold they do not want to go outside, they have to be took out . LOL

In the summer they get at least 2 hours outside everyday if not longer. They love to run so the horseback riding is great for them. Jenna even likes to try and race the horses and the horses like it too. LOL !

Dobes are very high energy dogs so they need lots of excerise. They actually will demand it.

I have a 10year old doberman and a 8month old rotti they go out together twice a day running in the woods for about 30mins. each time. The puppy goes out again latter in the day for another 20-30mins always running free and they would still go on.

I feel bad now, my dogs are lucky to go for a walk. They will get more in the summer, but one of mine is alot of muscle and i finally found out about my health problem and had it taken care of. But 2 kids (5year old and a 11month old) and 2 dogs is hard in my neighborhood. The older dog is trained but the other one is dumb. It sounds bad but he runs head first into the stairwrails to chase a cat toy. And They want to eat every bunny they see. Cottontails everywhere. They go outside whenever they want, they play and run with the neighbors dog. my 13 year old dog has been in this same house and so has the neighbors dog so they race back and forth along the fence. The other one trips over his own feet. They are huge.

My two have about 30 mins a day, depending on the weather. Oz point blank refuses to go out when it's raining, and Maggie will actually hang her bum over the threshold of the back door to do a poo so that she doesn't get wet

If Oz doesn't feel like he's had enough walk then he sits down and refuses to budge until you turn around back to the park. Or gets slower and slower as we approach home. But then he does much the same when he's had enough too....stubborn mule that he is!!
Mags would go forever given half a chance.

I play hide and seek and such with them in an evening, they tire out much easier with mental exercise!

Well, I've read that walks for growing dogs (Large breeds mostly) are supposed to be 10-15 minutes long, and when your dog is full grown, 30 minutes is the most. I take Max, my black lab, out throughout the day, and he gets a 20 minute or so walk in the evening. But he gets to run outside with me throughout the day. :)

I haven't heard many guidelines after the first couple of months for large dogs, though a good deal of that is breed dependent (Godens, for instance, have lots of hip problems, so young pups shouldn't be walked for too long). Jogging with some large breeds is discouraged until they are full grown, though reasonable amount of running on soft surfaces is good and healthy exercise.

So, to sum up, that can certainly be true for some breeds while it would be overly restrictive for others. I'd suggest researching any breeds of interest to learn what weakness(es) they have and take the appropriate steps to avoid them.

Re the large breed and limited exercise - I agree. I was always told with the Rotts to keep the exercise very short - i.e up until approx 12 months really 3 x 10 mins walk is better than 30 mins.... And even now I'm fairly careful not to hammer the exercise with Oz.
It's because of the comparatively heavy load of the body to the legs, and during those bone developing days too much exercise can damage in particular the elbows and hips and kick start a case of dysplasia. The cartilage gets damaged and then mis-forms into bone structure . Rotts in particular are prone to this, as are GS, labs and others.

Yeah, I read that labs are supposed to have limited exercise too, but I think it applies more to the giant breeds (i.e. saint bernard, great dane, rottie, ect.) :)

you are supposed to take out your dog for 1-2 hours a day no matter what breed. but 1 hour is ample so well done u!:D

I think it depends on the dog. Eevee gets out for 30 minutes to an hour each day.

The corgi pup I'm getting will only be able to take short walks till his growth plates have closed.

Yes. Max's daily walk goes through the local college where my dad works. There is a garden there with flowers and a ravine, and Max LOVES it! :)

I like to get Maddi out for at least 30min a day, preferably 45min-1hr twice a day. I usually use a 40-80ft rope so that she can run a lot.

I think, when determining the amount of exercise a dog should get, one should look at what the breed was/is bred for. Malamutes (like Maddi) are freight/sledding dogs and need a lot of exercise.

Rottweilers, retrievers, shepherds, collies, and huskies all were bred for a very active life-style, so their bodies are more adept to handling hours of exercise. It's my understanding, as well, that walking usually does little to actually work the dog; for a walk to be effective (for exercise purposes) it would have to be hours long. Games were the dog actively runs are also important in proper excercise. Walking, is, however, important for dog-owner bonding.

Shih-Tzus, Bichons, and Lhasa Apsos, on the other hand, were more bred as lap-type dogs, and would require less exercise.

Edit:
I've also read that it's important to only do what the dog can do. And, in the case of developing dogs, they should remain off hard surfaces so as not to damage growing joints.

I take Zoe out for an hour long walk a day during fall and spring. During the winter. it's only about a half hour a day. When it's raining, she refuses to go out at all. In the summer I take her an hour in the morning and an hour either in late afternoon or at night. She has loads of energy, and sort of slows down a lot when she realizes we're going back home lol! Both she and Bear get REALLY hyper once we're back in the door as if to say "We're not tired yet!" :D She also gets to run around in the backyard occassionally, though she has to be watched. I've caught her trying to jump the fence or dig under it to get at the much hated pitty/GSD in the backyard behind us.

I take him about 30-45mins each day.

Anyone know the standard of exercise time? My ex had 2 staffs and he took them out 3 times a day for about 30-40mins

Then general guideline is 5 minutes for every month of their life until they stop growing, so a 3 month old dog should have 15 mins. After that as much as you want really.

This is more important in larger breeds as they are more prone to getting bad hips, and over exercising can also stunt growth.

I walk my 8 month and 11 month for 40 mins each about 5 times a week. They don't go out on Tues or Wed as my partner works till very late at night on these days and I can't walk a dog and push the pram at the same time coz they pull too much.

I was told by others with more experience with large breeds that you can take them out as long as they last (i.e. they pick the time) but keeping them off of hard surfaces until 18 months - 2 years old is the important part with the joins. So running around in the grass is okay, but on tarmac it isn't. The reason is that their joints are still developing, and as Aurora said, damage can come from higher impact areas; esp. while running.

Once Maddi hit 7-8 months, she started needing a lot of exercise. Two 30-45 minute walks on a long leash in an area she could run in still didn't put much of a dent in her energy for the day, so I started taking her swimming more. I think swimming is one of the better things because it's low impact and they aren't likely to over heat.

My last dog was a field-bred English Springer Spaniel. Weather-permitting, we'd go for a 1-2 hour brisk walk once a day.
