I have a problem in that my Great Dane although we love her...well...stinks. We've tried bathing her but she stinks again within 2/3 days. I change her bed every couple of days. She gets brushed regularly, I tried dog deodorant - only lasted a day...someone said it could be her diet...she's fed twice a day on Wagg worker...cheap but she loves it..I did feed her tinned meat mixed with wagg but she now only gets a minute amount of meat with her dried stuff. Also we noticed a clear discharge from her nether regions...she had her last season at the end of November.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I agree that it sound like a diet issue. As far as the discharge I would maybe ask a vet.

I don't know what the discharge is. The stinkiness sounds like it could be her diet. Ive never heard of the food though.

Hi - the brand Wagg is quite well known here in the UK - the one I feed is the worker kibble which is higher in protein than the standard and is considerably cheaper...20kg bag £8.99. She seems to do well on it and since cutting down the tinned food she has improved a bit but she's still whiffy within days of a bath.

I hate to sounds like a dog food snob but most often if a dog has BO then cheap food is the cause. If you can afford it, try switching to a better grade that she likes. I would make a suggestion but as you are in the UK I do not know what brands are available.

Thanks...maybe I'll go dog food shopping this weekend to find a better alternative. Anythings better than being afraid to have visitors!!:p

Going back to the discharge issue, I have never had a bitch before so is a small level of discharge normal at times? She hasn't always had it...

My vote is that it's the dog food too. It will likely take some time after a change in diet too (and another good bath) or any real changes to occur.

About the discharge ... a vet check is definitely in order.

Thanks - guess I'll book her in for a check.
Back to the dog food = smell issue. Whats the opinion on feeding boiled rice instead of kibble and would you feed raw meat or cooked meat with it?

I fed one of our dogs cooked organic brown rice along with some shredded carrot, chopped parsley, dry dog food (Solid Gold brand), flax seed oil, and cooked chicken. She loved it!

Why did I feed her this you ask? Well, she got cancer at the age of 6 years old, and I started to do research on the web, of the many things I found, I came across an article on "What's really in your dogs food" and it made me sick...and as a result of all the research I made her this mix of food everyday for her meals.

I feed Shelby Solid Gold brand dog food as well, it is one of the healthiest dog foods on the market. This isn't the only brand of dog food available that is natural and healthy. Make sure you read the labels carefully/thoroughly before you pick out a new dog food...there are many things to look out for...especially ingredients like animal by-products and BHT. But there are many more, just do your research, and I'm sure you'll end up picking a good one :thumb:

As far as Raw diets...Dobermans is the one to ask about that...she is our expert here on feeding Raw. :)

As regards the discharge I would take her to the vet a.s.a.p. may be her anal glands need emptying. Is she spayed? If not and I am not trying to panic you but it could be an open pyometra with which you get a smell. So a vets visit is def. required for this and once you have got that sorted out then you can concentrate on the food. issue. Do keep us posted .

If she's 'scooting' or licking her bum, it could be her anal sacs. If they are full enough to be discharging on their own, it's quite the stench.

Hi - no she's not 'scooting', 'sledging' or licking her bum. She's doing her poops normally. I've made it sound like she has a continuos discharge this isn't so. It is an occassional clear 'string' that I've noticed maybe four times over the last month or so. I haven't had a bitch before so really don't know what's classed as normal. The smell is a general dog BO - kind of cheesy...like socks!!....she's also booked in for a bath and manicure!:)
