He's tearing up the carpet!

My dog enjoys ripping out my carpet. I now have two giant bald spots on the floor. Does anyone know how I can get my dog to stop? I've tried gently telling him to stop, I've tried scolding him. Whenever he rips up my carpet, I place him next to the ripped area, point to the rug and say no over and over again. I make him sit there for a few minutes. None of this is working. Any suggestions?

He is left alone on the carpet with no one paying attention?

He doesnt understand you putting him there and telling him no. You must tell him No in the act, if he has learned the word no.

He should not be allowed on the carpet if no one is watching. If you can not pay attention he should be in an enlosed area w/o carpet or a crate.

Our pup loved certain spots on the carpet when she was very young. We had to be constantly vigilent when those spots were exposed (the spots were very specific and covering them took care of the problem in the short term). After a month or two, she totally lost interest.

So, like zoe suggested, keep constant watch on the pup when he's out. There are also some enzyme sprays that mask scents if that is what's attracting him to those particular spots (in our case, the spots were visibly indistinguishable from the rest of the carpet).
