Well sprocket is doing very well at agility, but he has developed a problem with braking in the middle of the weaves. It first started at class when there was a A-frame right after the weaves (he loooovvveess A-Frames) no matter how many times we did the weaves right in the middle of the weaves he would just take off running towards the a-frame, I ended up having to put him on a leash through the weaves and stop him from bolting.

This problem has gotten a lot worse to the point he wont ever finish the weaves no matter the obstacle after , great entry but will do just two or three weaves and bolt. To complicate things more is I work at home with his weaves and he does them perfect, so I took the weaves to the park to implicate more distractions and excitement and still no problem.

I wanted to see if anyone else has ever had this problem and have some ideas?? I have seen some weaving training aids with wire, which will stop him from bolting, but Im not sure if this is the way to go.

Oh I just about forgot I have been putting him in a sit of a down after the weaves so he doesn’t feel he has to bolt to the next thing, but it doesn’t seem to be working.

How did you first teach the weaves?

If your dog is a soft tempered dog that is easily scared, wires are not for you. They can really turn a dog off of hte weaves.

If your dog is outgoing and wouldn't mind a correction from the wires, by all means, try them! :)

Something I do with all of my dogs is that if I KNOW they know something in agility, but are just getting too excited to complete it(popping out of weaves over and over) I simply take them off course, give them a short break in the crate, and bring them back out to try again. It's worked wonders for me. Though, admittedly, a few times I'd actually have to repeat the crating several times before the dog finally understood he WOULD do what I said if he wanted to play. And hte moment he listened and completed what I wanted him to, we had a PARTY of treats, praise, adn tugging!! :D
