Cocker Spaniel Stolen at Gunpoint in N.J.
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A dog owner in New Jersey had the unthinkable happen Saturday.
Two men approached the man walking his 5-year-old Cocker Spaniel in Clifton around 9 p.m., held him up at gunpoint, and demanded the dog. It happened on Fairmount Avenue.
The owner plead for the animal's safety and even offered money, but the assailants wanted the dog. The canine was taken by one of the men and given to the other, and both men then sped away in a car. Because of the darkness the owner was unable to get the license plate number of the car.
The dog, named "Scoop," is a rust and white colored, neutered male cocker spaniel. He was wearing a red and green collar at the time that said, "Spoiled Rotten" on it.
The family is offering a $500 reward for the return of their pet. The Associated Humane Society of Newark is matching that reward to total $1,000.
Anyone with information can call the Clifton Police Department or the Associated Humane Society of Newark.

    Too sad ... I can't even believe there are people in the world who could even think of doing such a thing. The owner has to be horrified & I can't even imagine being in his position.

you know the first thing that came to my mind was these people must have been stealing the dog to use as a bait dog! if they were stealing the dog to make money then they would have taken cash from the guy instead..... or they were stealing it for some other evil purpose.... im not trying to sound negative here but its just a theory in why someone would just steal a dog like that!!!!

That is the saddest story I've ever read :( but also the most upsetting story to date:mad: I would absolutely die if that happened to me and Shelby:(
You know, the thought of someone stealing Shelby from us has crossed my mind. I took her with me one day for a car ride, just up the street, to pick up a pizza, and I left her in the car (no, it wasn't a hot day, I know better) just for about 2 mins, if that. Later the thought of someone breaking a car window to steal her crossed my mind. Fortunately, that day, there wasn't anyone around in the parking lot, so I wasn't too worried about leaving her while I ran in. I could also see our car and her, very clearly through the large restaurant windows. But still, you never know when danger is going to strike.
That man's cocker spaniel was such a nice looking dog, and I don't doubt for one minute that someone, for whatever reason, wouldn't try to steal Shelby given the opportunity...
I hope something like that never happens to our family...or any of you.
I also hope those bandits are punished when found to the fullest extent of the law...but more so, I hope that mans dog is returned to him, unharmed.

That's just horrifying. I thought they were just breed "shopping", but the "bait" theory puts a despicable, shocking spin on the story. Am I naive? Should I worry about taking my dogs out for a walk these days? Makes me just sick for the family of that dog. So terribly sad. :(

How terribly desperate that family must feel. Not knowing who's got your dog or what they're doing to it. Makes me physically ill thinking about it, and it's not even my dog. What a horrible, horrible thing!

I doubt that you do, cause once you do know it will make you sad...
I put the answer a bit further down..
a bait dog is for mean people who train their pits to fight. To give the pits selfesteem they start with small critters like hamsters and rats, then they move up in the food chain. This to give them prey and killing instinct without getting hurt themselves (the dog that is) a nice half old cocker spaniel will be no match for the dog to tear up. a lot of the time the bait dog is also chained and muzzeld so it cant hurt the pitbull this so the pit get even more eager whitout getting hurt......................
