I have 2 Japanese Spitz, 1 dog (aged 2 years) and 1 bitch (aged 3 years). The bitch is in season at the moment, has had a previous litter so is 'experienced' and is doing everything she can to make the dog interested! Unfortunately the dog is not experienced and has tried things like mounting her the wrong end! As far as know there has been no mating up to this point but I am getting a bit worried that maybe it just won't happen? Can this ever be the case? I am trying not to leave them on their own too much but am wondering if it could have happened without me knowing (they were left for a few hours the other day together). I have had dogs for many years but this is my first attempt at breeding (the bitch had a litter with her previous owners) so it's all still a bit new, it doesn't matter how many books you read they never cover it all! :)

Hi Col and welcome :wave2:
You are right, sometimes books are no help. Is there no experienced breeder you can turn to that is near by? And is there any particular reason that you wish for them to produce a litter?

Hi, there are no JS breeders over here and in fact there aren't many breeders of any type of dog on our little island!! (Although there are the usual puppy farm type places) We got our bitch in Ireland and our dog in England. The main reason for breeding is they have both come from excellent parents (including crufts breed winners) with the dog doing very well showing and they are few and far between - quite a difficult breed to get hold of in the UK at the moment although I have found them to be excellent family pets. :)

It is quite common for a young animal to not just "get it right" and it may take some coaxing.

Have you tried acting "placing the dog" in the right spot? Then, kinda work the back hips of the dog till instinct kicks in & then back off & leave them to their business. Works with cats. Good luck!

its also quite common for two house mates not to mate;) . Seperate them DONT leave them together when you are not around as damage can be done to one of them

In experienced breeding (my hubby not myself) cause i really don't know! My hubby has been breeding dogs since before i met him. Anyways....9times out of 10 the male will mate with a female in season. It probably has already happen without you knowing so, my two pomeranians did and I'm around them almost 24 hours a day! With your male not knowing which end to "do his business" trust me he will find his groove. Dont worry...
Just keep you eye on them, you'll probably catch them before she ends her season. Also, I would call someone that knows more about breeding! Get a paper or search the web....find a breeder that breeds (Japanese Spitz). Find someone that would be happy to talk and help you with this process! Keep me informed...and if you need anything pm/i'll keep checking this thread!:)

I know I shouldn't leave them together, I had to rush out is all and it's difficult to separate 4 at short notice! Thanks for the advice though :)

thats ok.

Just a thought can he reach the bitch or she is on the big size? if she is you may need to stand him on something.

He is slightly larger than her so shouldn't be a prob. I have noticed he is starting to try the correct end now so maybe it's just his inexperience and he'll get it right yet!! :)

i'd love to hear all the answers to this post because my dogs live in farly tight living quarters...i mean come on there's 3 LABS...and two humans...any space is a tight space haha, but mine all live together! just because i am curious as to why housemates may not mate?
i too am also curious about inexperience, so please talk some more lol!! ;)
BTW:this is for goldens, do you have homes for all your "soon to be pups"? PM me if you want!

I'd go with A.I. if the dog won't mount.

I mean, they'll likely figure SOMETHING out soon enough, but if you are concerned about missing this heat... A.I. is an option.

Artifical insemination is a great option for many reasons. First- it keeps the male or female from being stressed with travel and planes. Second- the female knows well i am just at the vets, but come home to mom at night. Lastly - top show dogs the sperm is taken when they have time off and rested and not after another female... We are doing this with galina, and happy about it. Its much more likely to not only take- but a large litter as well. And much less stress on the breeding pair.
