I won't even guess at the weight part of the question as I don't know much about the development of that breed, but for our dog, we've been told the transition to adult food should happen well after one year. Large breeds often remain in the puppy stage for two to three years, so you should be able to safely wait to ask your vet this question when you take him in for his one year shots.

We weened our pup down from three meals a day to two at 4 months (we maintained the quantity just divided it up differently). She seemed fine with that, and it didn't hurt her growth at all.

my dog (avater) only gets dinner and maybe breakfast on the weekend so ur pups lucky to get that much food, im almost 100 percent sure that a 5 month pup should weigh around the 10-15 kg mark as my mate has a pup the same age and thats wat it weighs, by about 18 months he should be about 25-35 kg mark it depends on how big he is, my dog was about 30-35 kgs at 18 months, shes now 6 yrs old and shes about 40-45 kgs, or if u dont think it sounds right wat i said go and see ur local vet and ask how much ur pup should weigh and when u should start feeding him adult food.

hi yes feeding your pup three times aday is correct,he could go on to 2 meals aday when he is 6 months,i would continue to feed him twice daily for the rest of his life because german shepards are prone to a condition called gastric trosion which is when the stomach fills with gas, this then twist around itself ! it is a very serious condition which if not treated straight away can lead to death, all deep chested dogs are prone to this and you can help prevent it by feeding small meals, not exercising for at least 1 hour after feeding and not feeding straight after exercise.as for the weight you should be able to feel your dogs ribs but not see them,he really needs to stay on puppy food intil he is at least 1 year or ideally go on to a junior food until he is 18mths because german shepards do not mature until about 18mths.hope this helps

My pup, Morley is about 8 and a half months, as of about a month ago, he eats once a day, and he has to earn his food, either by running 3.5 km with me, or doing some obedience sessions, he knows if he plays up, he's going to bed hungry, he's extremely well behaved, and very trustworthy, i learnt all these techniques from a sheep farmer, who is the president of the dog club i'm a member of, all his training and raising techniques are totally different from everyone at the club, and let me tell you, they work 100%, his dog is a national australian obedience champion, and a sheep herding champion (Australian kelpie) lol that's right this thread was about feeding wasn't it...:p
For a german shepherd, i'd probably be feeding them more as a pup, simply so that they grow to their full potential, and once as an adult, there are way too many overweight dogs, it saddens me, i think my dog truly loves the idea of working for/earning his tucker, that's just my 2 cents lol

I think a puppy of that age should be fed 3 times per day. That's what I have read. I'm not sure how much food to feed, though. Important considerations are:
1) How much your dog weighs
2) How old your dog is
3) Your dogs activity level (lazy or active)
Good luck!

Many vets recommend that a pup med or large size, be, put on adult food at four months. This slows down the growing spurt. Puppy chow has alot of fat and protein.

A puppy should not be jogging. The hips and bone structure have not calcified.

You are doing more harm than good. I am a nurse, but, also do vet tech work, running or jogging with a med, small or large breed under at least 2years of age is detrimental to his growth platlets.
