Hi everyone, I picked up this dog 2 weeks ago from the local rescue centre. They had him down as a 6 month old German Shepherd.
The vet checked him over and thought he was probably around a 9 month old German Shepherd crossed with something but she couldnt really say what.
He's long haired and it looks like its crimped around the back of his head and behind his ears :)
Here's a few pictures of him, hopefully someone has some idea of what his 'other half' is, Im almost thinking collie.

I'm suprised at how many people have asked me if he's a Husky while i've been out walking, as to my mind he looks nothing like one. I guess its the wolfish gray around his neck and backend hehe.

Looks more like a Belgian Shepherd rather than a GSD to me, But possibly Belgian xGSD x or collie cross, no matter what Yogi is a lovely dog and you should enjoy him and be very proud of him

Welcome to DogForum.org. :)

German Shepherds do come in black and they cam also have long hair. LOL ! So......... ;) He could be a GSD but I think he is crossed, with what I have no idea, possibly Rough Collie. :)

Thanks for the replies :)
The main reason for trying to figure out what he is, is so I can find out if he needs more exercise than he currently gets.
The past 2 weeks hes usually had 2 or 3 half hour walks per day, we try to get him to chase tennis balls at the field, but my 10 year old dog gets the ball first every single time (hes fast!), and never gives me it back :D so he just ends up following my other dog around. But he still comes back home insanely lively, then has some training then its back to being hyper :)

I think he's definitely crossed with some highly active dog. My other GSD has nowhere near as much energy and never has had

Perhaps he has some alaskan malamute in him?

I just googled GSD/Malamute cross and one of the pages it came up with was about the 'Shiloh Shepherd' and on the Wikipedia page for Shiloh Shepherds some of the pictures are strikingly similar with the grayish silver patches around the back of the neck!

Hi! Welcome to the forum. I'd guess him to be a cross with one of the Shepherd or Belgian Shepherds & I don't know what else. He's a nice looking dog.

The reason I said maybe Belgian is because from the pictures he looks too fine boned to be GSD/Shiloh, agree his colourings similar to Shiloh, but still think he is rather too fine to be that. As I already said he is a stunner no matter what his mix.

Yeah, well I guess i'll just have to see if he starts tiring easier when he puts on some weight. The rescue centre said he was picked up on the streets and not much was known about him apart from him being extremely thin under all that fur. We bathed him a couple of days ago at really was quite shocking, all skin and bones! Hard to see from the pictures since all that hair makes him look ok. I'm not sure if he's likely to get any bigger height wise but with regular walks and meals hopefully he will fatten up a bit and not be so crazy :)

Hi Zimbie He is only 9/10months old and still a puppy I should think probably thats why he is still so active and hopefully he will calm down when he is a little older. I wish you both every success in the world and hope he has a long and happy life with you.

to the forum!

My what a nice looking dog! Do you have any full body shots you can share so we can get a better look at him? Well, he's definitely from the Shepherd family...but if we could see more of him it might help us to make a better determination :)

Thanks for the pics! Hmmm...here I thought I could make a good guess after seeing the side views...but I'm speechless :) I was going to say maybe a bit of Elkhound...because of the grayish tones of fur...but I'm not so sure.

Is his name Zimbie? When people pass and they say "oh, what kind of dog is that"...just reply..."he's a Zimbie...A one of a kind..." :)

Sweetie that looks mostly Border Collie and maybe some Shepherd or Aussie mix. Nice dog anyhow, enjoy him, he is so cute.

His face shots reminded me most of the Belgian Shephard mentioned by someone else.

But his profile: straight legs and head profile remind me of the Spitzen-type breeds.

If I had to guess I would guess Belgian Shephard/Spitzen-type are in him.

He's looks like a fine dog, definitely a cutie.

Hehe, his hair is really fluffy yeah, he has an extremely fine undercoat that gets matted really quickly (doesn't help that he chewed up his brush) Its kind of annoying though because when the undercoat hair comes out you cant see it on your fingers its that fine and it tickles when you touch your face

Aussie GSD mix. My babys one, and looks exactly like him 'cept for a little more white. He may be a belgian aussie shep mix though.

Purebred belgians only have white on chin, chest, and toes. Not on their back thighs ;)

I took care of a mix between German shephers and one of these..

I dont know the english name.. but he looked like JUST like yours, marking and everything..
just a thought :D

HE IS SO CUTE though! and about the exersize maybe he is a threeway xross so he is part BC too.. in that case tennisballs wont help..
out let him find stuff you hide..
15 min with working with his nose will tiring him more than 1 hours tennisball.. :) Good luck!

Normally true, but there is however always the possibility that a purebred does not conform to the breed standard.

I will try the hiding food, thanks :)

I think i actually wore him out for a while today, after alot of rain there were huge swampy areas at the park and he decided it was great fun running back and forth through them for half an hour, then he played 'annoy the husky then run away' for a while.
Funnily enough he's better behaved than my 10 year old GSD cross, who instead of annoying the husky at the park went and growled and chased an Akita and a French Mastiff, luckily their owner had them well trained or I fear he'd have been turning around and running away also :)

He's beautifull!
Sure he has some german sheperd blood! Or maybe Shiloh Shepherd...
From the colour of the coat, I guess he may also be mixed with some nordic breed...
Anyway, he's stunning!!!

I think he looks more like a BC or Belgin cross. It would explain why he is so high energy.

Vey cute!!

When I seen pics, I seen GSD. Then, when I seen the 'laying down' pic, Beligan jumped in my head. Lady is part Beligan GSD mix, so I can say...

GSD N' Beligan? Maybe a Collie?

He has the exact same face as my girl, Colbi. She's a black Lab mix.
No matter what he is though, he sure is adorable! :D

I was going to say too Belgium or border collie. But a belgium is a bigger dog..

Ooo! I'd say Border Collie- my friend used to have a German Shep. crossed with a border collie and was alomost identical!!

Oooo, new replies, thanks guys. I will need to take some new pics of him soon, he has grown a bit and bulked out in the last few weeks so he probably looks closer to what he should look like now. At the moment he is 80lb but the vet said to keep giving him 3 meals a day for another week or two.

I agree with borzoi mad, I didnt get GSD from him at all, looks like a Belgian Groenendal mix, perhaps with BC(which is actually a rather common mix)
