thanks kelsie
i read your other post and see that you went to a rodeo once and saw horses die and be injured... that is not the norm. i have not ever seen a horse die or injured though a friend of mine's daughter lost her horse this year. she was winning college rodeo roping and her horse, pickles, dropped over dead just before her final run... it was very suspcious and they had two autopsies done on pickles... they never did find out what happened. they suspected poison (couldn't find a traceable one during the autopsy) or that someone bashed him in the head hard. they were a number one winning team and it is very sad.

i told my uncle, lets go now! when i saw that horse hit the rail. it made me mad. they also had dogs out there to chase the horses back in.

what kind of rodeo were you at? i have never seen dogs allowed in the arena... you must not have been at a sanctioned event. it would not even make sense to put dogs in to chase the horses.
i take it the horse that hit the rail was a bronc eithe bareback or saddle. they are bred to buck and they are highly valued animals that are not abused. just as it took time to breed horses for pleasure and for better cow lines and for gaming events...it took a long time to get the lines needed to produce the bucking lines.
i am not going to try to convince you to love rodeo but it takes a very skilled cowboy/girl to be good at it. i will tell you my daughter, who will be 10 in august, refuses to go to the circus because of what she feels is the abuse of the animals (mainly the elephants) i hold a lot of respect for her convictions. i thought it was quite a stand for an 8yr old (her age when she decided no more circuses) to take.

i dunno. i dont think i can ever go back to another rodeo. after i saw those horses all skinny, some stunk so bad! and i watched them shoot one of the horses and the others die from the broken legs because of how they were. i dunno what kinda rodeo, all i know was when the horses refused to go in they let two jackies out and they bit the horses heels. its stupid. im sorry but i hate them. look at this video it made me remember that day at the rodeo.

That horse is beautiful! I've never been around horses and only rode twice in those tourist trail ride things, which were okay. I've never been to a rodeo, either, but my mother used to own horses (before I was born, obviously) and said they used a tool to tie around the horses or bull's testicles to make it buck. Is that true?

not at any of the rodeo's i have been too. i know two professional bullriders and i also know a professional bull fighter... in fact i moved my horses to the bull fighters place. i will ask him when i go back out there this weekend (bz helping a friend move this week every day) and ask him.
i don't really see a lot of "need" for riding the rough stock. i do enjoy barrels and calf roping. i love to team pen and that is being recognized more and more.

I can't say for certain... but I know that mares are also used for broncos, at least on the few I've watched on TV. So, I don't think they do it, at least not anymore.

you are right about mares being used as broncs... i was just thinking bulls. and to my knowledge is not done but i am going to ask people who would know for certain.
i know here we have breeders who just breed rough stock...
those animals are breed for their temperament and you would not get them saddle broke ever....

Ahhhh, that makes sense. I can see breeding terribly tempered animals just for that perpose, provided they're taken care of in retirement.
I've watched a few rodeos on television and though the barrel racing looked like a lot of fun. :)

my son used to have a real gamey cowy horse and i took him around the barrels once...fastest horse i have ever been on. that boy could fly... my horses looked like they were lazy next to him. :)

The only 2 times I've riddin' were pretty slowly paced. The first time I was told (long afterwards) that they drugged the horses to keep them docile. The horse I was on, Bear, was horribly clumsy and I was scared out of my wits because he kept stumbling and tripping over things. I thought for sure he would fall with me on him. The second time I went to a different stable and rode the prettiest Palomino I'd ever seen. He was HUGE, and they let me trot him a little back to the stables.
My boyfriend's dad bought a purebred Quarter horse and he said he'll teach me how to properly ride one day :D

Gorgeous horse dlambertz!! I'm so jealous :D
I used to go trail riding alot when I was younger. And I went to horse camp when I was about 10. Then I co-oped at a stable for my last year in high school. Best time of my life. I got free riding lessons. On my second day of lessons, one of the ladies I worked with gave me a private lesson on her hyper 3 year old arabian, and she took off before I was properly seated lol! That was my first fall. But I got right back on. I also sort of "fostered" a gorgeous palomino while I was there, named Luger. His owner neglected him. Never came to see him, groom him or ride him so I did all that. We became best buddies. I miss him :( But I just recently applied at another stable and am waiting to hear back!
