For the past 2 days my yellow lab 4 yrs old has had white gunk coming for one of his eyes. The eye is a bit red and it looks like it might be a little infection. Is there something I can do at home to treat this before I spend $100 at the vet.
Thanks in advance.

Weird... my vet charges the same price for every size of dog...
I would take the dog to the vet... in the long run, it could save you money since you won't be buying ten different home remedies to try and then they don't work and the infection gets worse because it's a week later... >^^;<

I'd be tempted to give regular washing out a go first - use boiled cooled water, and each time use a fresh piece of lint free cloth, start at the inner corner of the eye and wipe out.
If that doesn't help after a couple of days then give the vet a shout.

Put a tea bag in a cup & fill about a 3rd full with boiling water, leave to brew until the water becomes luke warm, remove the tea bag and get some cotton wool pads (or something similar) and soak in the tea till saturated, squeeze the tea out of the cotton wool into the eye like you would with eye drops & wipe out any gunk, use a seperate piece of cotton for each eye, do this a couple of times a day for about a week.
This is an old wives remedy but works great, tea has a natural mild anticeptic in it. I used this method on my on my dog recently, worked a treat. Its also supposed to work on humans too.

i have a shih tzu and he was accidentally sprayed in the face with a hose. since he has "bug" eyes will this hurt them? they look ok.

Well,.... IMO, I would try 1st asking a vet if there is any home things you could try to heal the eye yourself. {Such as the ones listed by the other replies} and if it doesnt heal in a couple of days, or you see it getting worse, than of course go to a vet

any eye prob should be treated IMMEDIATELY even if you have to pay extra to go to the emergency vet. one of my shih tzu was blinking his eye and had mucous like discharge and i thought it's an allergy or something harmless - it then turned red and i took him to the vet and he had an eye ulcer and it was so bad they had to sew his eye shut for a week for it to heal. it's still scarred and he had to be on steroids for 4 months - steroids are bad because they suppress the immune system and can cause osteoporosis.

Wash the eye with a washcloth wipe diagonally. if it doesn't help, i really would suggest taking your dog to yhe vet.

My 2 year old yellow lab has just gotten over the same exact infection. We took her to the vet and were persribed a medication(sorry im not sure how much it was). After about 4 days of applying the medication, she was fine.
