I am going to be graduating highschool next year and going to University. I an wanting to take a dog with me, but I need a dog that will be fine alone from 4-8 hours. I will most probably be able to make it home for lunch and stuff. I just need some advice on finding the right breed.

Hi & welcome to the forum. Great to have you with us. You might want to consider rescuing an adult since you'll be away from extended hours.

About the breed choice ... what types of dogs appeal to you? Size, coat, temperament, activities, etc.

Hello and Welcome to the forums! Katz is right when you answer these question we could help, but the decision is up to you. We can just give you our opinions and enlight you on the best temperament for a dog that will be left alone for an extended part of the day. Hope we can help in the decision process!:)

Well, I'm looking for a medium-small sized dog. I really like the look of the spitz and have been looking into the Keeshond, but I just want some options...I'm not really too picky on what the dog looks like. I like all dogs.

Hi and great on your decision to go to University. There are a few things you need to establish first, such as - will I go on placement and if I do how many hours will I be on placement, will I be required to stay away nights (sleep ins) - will I be required to go abroad or on field trips- can I take a dog with me - generally the answer is no. So you need someone to look after your pooch if any of the above applies.

Most halls of residence will not allow dogs - in the UK (generally) you are required to live in a hall of residence for the first year. You would find it difficult renting a flat/house/apartment with a dog - most landlords don't want students - let alone dogs!

You need to establish your time commitment - will you be able to commit the time to exercise etc., when your assignments are due in - when you've to spend hours and hours in the library researching (dogs are not allowed unless they are assistance dogs).

Hope the above helps

Hi and welcome to the forum from me and my Gang in Bonnie Scotland. Don't know how much research you have done into the Spitz but spitz breeds can be quite vocal so if you are aware of this and don't mind then that's fine, just thought I should bring it to your notice.

You have already gotten some good advice, so all I will add is that I agree!

welcome!

I just wanted to double check something real quick because I know this was the case with most of the universities I applied to.

Have you checked with the schools you are going to whether or not freshmen are required to live in the dorms? I know at Virginia Tech they enforce that rule to the point that there is sometimes no place for the upperclassmen on campus to go. If so, you probably will not be allowed to have a pet (other than maybe a fish) with you, so you might want to double check that.

Which schools are you thinking about applying to?

Hope that helped :D

Totally agree- then you are past the puppy stages of chewing, housebreaking. Also you would one a breed that is not much of a barker or it will upset your neighbors that are studying.

Hi well done for deciding to go to Uni. it seems like only yesterday i was there studying and partying. to be honest i could never have coped with a dog, studying, going out, and working part time to get some money for going out. I would suggest volunteering at the local rescue centre that way you will get lots of experience of dogs, get to walk them and make great four legged friends without worring about coming home after class to find your room chewed up to bits, or not being able to go to that special night out (of which there will be lots) as you need to stay home with your dog. However it is ultimalty your decision and I wish you the best of luck whatever your decide.

No, I don't have to live in the dorms for the first year. I was going to be staying with some family, I have three options and depending on the option there will be somebody home all day. I just went to look on the website and they didn't say anything about no pets for the single housing on campus...but I'm not sure.

I was going to be applying to Uvic (University of Victoria) which is in BC Canada. thanks for the advice!

No, I don't mind. I had this German Shepherd named Max and he would talk all of the time, so I'm quite used to vocal dogs.

lol, I am jealous...I go to Virginia Tech and because I am military for the past four years I have had to live on campus :( (and all we can have is fish...they are not as cuddly as furkids)

but I'll be out of the corps next semester and in an apartment (TG!) and I will have my puppy :D

Good luck and I hope you enjoy! College is amazing...it took me three years to realize that (lol), but I am looking forward to spending a couple of years getting my grades up and then going back for a masters degree! :p

Yeah...it turns out that I am going to be living on campus (at least for the first year). My mum said "you need to go and live on your own. You know if you stay at auntie and uncle's Auntie will just cater to you all of the time." So I wont be able to have any pets which SUCKS, but oh well...it's only for five years. I'm happy for you and your puppy!

Don't be alarmed, i know they are huge but they are very calm, affectionate and, good for your case, are not destructive when left alone, preferring to just sleep through it. Also, they are fine in smaller houses, better than some of the smaller more lively dogs because they do not run around everywhere all the time; a mastiff will just plonk themselves as close to you as possible. Also they do not demand too much exercise or grooming so are perfect for a students lifestyle, especially as they are so adaptable. Good luck, whatever you go for!!

Disreguard the post that this post is replacing... er... yeah.

Yes. Now that I know he/she won't be alone... Go Mastiff! Consider Rottie too, for the same reasons.

No, wait! You say your going to be on campus and not with family? Ok... back to the cat/goldfish thing.
