Hi everyone,

I had a cat about 4 years ago. She was only 3 years old and had to be put down. The problem is, I have no clue why. My parents don't know either. I was wondering if anyone on here had any idea what might have been wrong with her. Here's the whole story:

My cat, Sophie, would vomit right after she finished eating. She was sleeping on top of the couch one day and when she got down there was some sort of discharge on the sofa. I think it was brownish/reddish. She was not spayed.
My mom babysat for a veterinarian's secretary, so the secretary took Sophie to the vet's office one morning to get her checked out. She called a few hours later and told my mom that Sophie was too sick and had to be put down, but she never told us what was wrong. We looked in this book that we have that helps you to recognize any illness in your cat, and we came up with a problem with the esophagus for the vomiting and a womb infection for the discharge.

Any idea what was wrong? Anything is appreciated.

that doesnt sound right, a vet should give you full detail of the diagnosis and have your permission to put them to sleep, legaly they had no right to just do it. the discharge was more than likely what you suspected, an infection, and the vommiting could have been for numerous reasons, im sorry you had to loose your cat this way, i am appalled at how many bad vets there are out there, fortunatly i have never had to experience one myself but i trust my vet now as i worked for them and saw what went on.

I agree with Sable, this would have been illegal in the U.S., and most likely in Canada as well. You can't just put down someone's cat without their consent! I have no idea what the medical condition would have been, but I am so sorry that you have experienced this and are stuck guessing.

It is hard to say what the decision making reason was. Pyometra can make a cat very, very sick & can easily become a life-threatening situation. The vomiting could be a result of many different illnesses. I suspect that somebody was told the reason that there seemed to be no hope. It does sound to me like somebody was trying to spare you grief & worry instead of giving you all the details.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry for your loss. What a hard thing!

Yes...maybe pyometra, or something like Feline AIDS or Leukemia. None of which is fun to go through.

Yeah I was thinking feline aids too... Might also explain why no one wanted to say anything about it.

Thank you for your opinions. :)

Oh, and I just wanted to let everyone know that the vet did have permission to put her down; he just never told us why he had to.
