View Full Version : Our dogs, and how we exercise them.

Dobermans are very active and high energy dogs, this is what we do to keep our dogs in shape.

We ride horses and they come along, they have done this with us since they were younger. They love it and can't wait to go once we go get the horses from the pasture.

Also Rudy loves to swim and Jenna likes to wade ;). Very good exercise for them.

We are lucky in that we live in the country and the dogs can run whenever we are outside. They are NOT allowed to run loose at all times.

What else do people do ???

I was thinking of flyball for our guys does anyone do that ?

We like to take our pup to one of the local dog parks, but the weather hasn't been very good for that recently (either too cold or too muddy). The best exercise she's been getting recently has been playing with a friend's puppy (about four months old) until the two of them drop. Beyond that, she gets walked twice a day unless the weather is particularly bad. We play with her a lot indoors as well, and she's not opposed to running laps around the living/dining rooms when she needs to burn off some excess energy.

Get a friend with a dog, let them play in the backyard for 30 mins, and your all set :)

But that doesn't quite stimulate their brain, so do some tricks or shape new behaviors at home :)

I also do Agility with my dogs.

we go to the dog park every day for about an hour plus a morning walk. On rainy days, she gets to go to her friend's house to play, or she comes over to ours. We have a very high energy pup!

an afghan hound is ready to run at all times but as a sight hound can never be off lead anywhere. not even from the house to the backyard...you may never see your sight hound again. a great example is vivi, the whippet, who was lost at kennedy airport after winning an award of merit westminster. i would love for mia to go galloping with me after the horses but she is quicker than they are and i am afraid we would never see her again. we give her lots of outdoor time in the fenced yard and lots of walking time to keep up with her energy level. if they are no exercised sufficientlythey are more apt to run off.

I've got 2 "downtown dogs". They live for their twice daily walks throughout the neighbourhood or to one of the many dog parks near our apartment.

We're lucky to live in a city that has many greenspaces. And once a year we go on vacation "for the dogs" by renting a cottage up north for a week and taking the dogs hiking every day. They absolutely love it.

I wish I lived in the country - if only for the dogs.

Dock diving is dock diving wheteher they are retrieving a bumper, a kong or a tennis ball. There is no sport called konging.

My lab Max goes out for runs through out the day with me, and he gets a walk at night. We also take him swimming :)

We bike, cycle or ride with our three daily and walk through the forest and play games like hide and seek. We have lakes nearby but two of ours always get itchy afterwards so we don't let them very often as we have to run home and wash them off. Ollie loves to swim just for the fun of it though!

Lexie and I love to walk, run, play and swim. I've stopped swimming in the river for the timebeing as it's turned a bit cold for me. She's still at it though. She also plays with another dog which I'm really pleased about. They get on so well. I like playing hide and seek with her too.

Besides throwing a freezbe or tennis ball I ride the golf cart and they run after me. They get tons of exercise this way as the faster I go they must go. Fun Fun:D :D

I have to take it easy with my pooch just now. She's a 9 year old GSD and gets 2 walks a day, but fell over a couple of days ago chasing her favourite ball, and hurt herself. The ball has been kept in the basket, and she just gets to sniff and bimble about in the field.

She's OK, no harm done, and she has stopped limping. I might take the ball out again tomorrow... maybe!

Still working on finding something that he takes too.

We went for a walk last night, but the neighbourhood was very busy and noisy and he couldn't wait to get home.

I have tried frisbee and ball, but he hasn't caught on to that yet. He does have a rope that I dragged around yesterday and we played gentle tug of war. He also likes to chase after it.

He seems to get bored easy.

When I don't have time to exercice them,I bicycle them for half an hour. They love it.They also love swimming and walking.
With my golden,I do flyball and practice once a week for an hour with the team. She started really late,at six,had ,her first tournment,in January with her 1st title and is going to her next one,end of september. She is now 7 so there's no age for starting a sport. They usually exercice 2 hrs a day, minimum.:)

This is actually something we're a bit worried about with our lab mix. We want to get her more excercise but we didn't want to push her too much lately because the of the excessive summer heat we've had and because she still just a pup and I heard they need to have their bones "settle". But now the temp is much better and she's almost 1 year old so I think it's time to step up the excercise.

I so wish we lived on or near a farm so we could let her run. I'm surprised at all the people who go to dog parks because after reading about dogs the one thing it seemed like everyone agreed on was that dog parks were bad.

For now we just walk Georgia but I'm trying to figure out a routine to include her in my morning jogs. My jogs are too long for her now as the minimum I normally go is 5 miles so I need to find a unique routine.

She won't chase a ball but frisbees are chased provided she likes to chew them. We just introduced the "trade" command and now she will drop the frisbee for a treat instead of chewing it up. She doesn't seem interested in catching the frisbee though, but any game where she will run back and forth is great for me.

One thing we may start more is digging at the nearby sand vollyeball court. She seems to love it. It's also pretty easy to clean up as all we need to do is fill the holes she makes by moving some sand around. I've thought it would be funny to take a rake with me like they have at golf courses.

Georgia also seems to tire pretty easily so we're a bit cautious. It doesn't take many frisbee trips before she starts to lose focus, which I think is due to being tired. One time while digging she actually stopped to lay down for a bit. Just something we have to watch out for I guess.

No two days are the same for Jake's exercise. If we go out on our tandem in the woods he runs alongside us, but we do have a carrier on the back so he can ride in there when he gets tired, or if we need to go on the road.

We walk a lot in the Peak District National Park and a 10 mile hike isn't unusual - but, its a lot of up and down hill so we are generally very tired.

We go to the water park - Jake thinks that's bliss - he would, he's an irish water spaniel. He will swim all day if we let him.

Walk along the canal - Jake does not swim in there - but he'd love to jump in.

Plus we play garden games, chasing, jumping etc.

I'd like to take him to obedience and agility classes.

I take my boys to a nearby lake or to the river for lots of exploring and lots of swimming. I'm starting S&R with my pup, so we're working on his tracking.

I have also started running my lab with me at night, both for security (he looks scary, and can act the part if necessary) and because he has gotten a little bit chunky lately.

I've also purchased a wonderful new toy, a Chuck It. Now my lab can chase balls until he thinks he's gonna fall over without my arm getting tired.

Those chuck its are great. Here in the UK they are about £10 in the petshops but if you go into a store called 'poundland' they are just that £1.

Well here are the possiblities
a walk down to the river past some houses, takes about 1/2 hour and usually we do this as a foursome when I get home from work

the same route, but I jog it with them (alone, DH has knee problems)

the same route but I am on a bicycle

if I am feeling lazy or rushed we just play with our toys in our yard.

OR on the weekend, DH will bike a longer route with them, or we go for a long hike (6-10 miles), or I take them for a 3 mile jog, or we climb a mountain. Sometimes we go swimming.

Definitely if I did not have them I would not be in as good shape as I am! They insist on going outside and doing something every day!

Get a bike with doggie attachment or a golf cart, cannot beat that way for exercising both at the same time except for riding in the golf cart the lazy way lol:D
