A bet you guys have never heard me mention my little perfect golden by the name of Jake? It's never come up, but now I think I shoould say something.

We got Jake from a breeder. He was 2 monthes old. Perfect disposition, perfect standard, everything about him was perfect. he was the kind you could let offleash and he wouldn't go anywhere outside. No training needed. The "I'll follow you everywhere" dog.

We were planning a trip to Virginia (mountains) and couldn
't bring him because we'd have to keep him locked up. So we made arrangements with a friend to keep him until we got back. her neighbor had a dog so he wouldn't be bored.

So we went, and around thursday i felt like something in me had wilted, died. I couldn't identify anything wrong and shrugged the nagging feeling off.

We get home, no messages on the machine. So we call to inquire what would be a good time to pick up Jake. They tell us he's dead. Precious, perfect Jake is dead. 3-4 monthes old. We had only had him about 1.5 monthes. And he was gone.

It turns out they'd put him on a chain in their backyard with the neighbors dog to play unsupervised. They had children, so their was a swingset. Jake was running and attempted to jump over the swing. Being little, he couldn't touch the bottom on the otherside. He'd hung himself.

They had the body at the vets. It was frozen. We kept it closed and buried him with my previous love, our first dog. I didn't cry much. Just sort of sat on our swingset and swung. I didn't know much then except it hurt, I'd just lost Puttles, and now Jake. (Yes, Puttles. No, not 'puddles')

That was about 2 years ago. We've never chained a dog since unsupervised. the only time they've been chained is when camping, and they've had someone watching them at all times.

I remembered this because I was looking through a photo albun and saw my perfect angel again.

Please, don't chain your dogs. Ask any vet, they'll say it's common. A dog jumping over a swing, a basement window, anything. It's common.

Oh, that is so terribly sad. It is horrible to think how quickly accidents like that can happen. I'm so sorry for the loss of your beautiful golden pup.

I believe chains are very dangerous too & the only time Ozzy gets chained up is when Mark is working in the yard & Ozzy wants to get into the middle of things. We've got a tie-out so that he can watch Mark without getting in his way.

That is so terrible and I'm so sorry you had to go through that.

A nearby town, Texas City I believe, has banned chaining. They're giving people some time to make other arrangements for their dogs then they'll get fined, etc.

I'd like to see it banned everywhere frankly - at least in terms of unsupervised chaining. it's just too dangerous.

That is dreadful - i'd never even leave a collar on a dog as I've heard of so many accidents through collars getting caught etc.

So sorry Golden xx

I understand how you feel. About 18 months ago we rescued a tibetan terrier. We bonded very quickly. One morning i left for work. My husband let him out, he tried to follow me, jumped the gate which was picket style and hung himself. The crazy thing was i NEVER leave collars on my dogs but because he was new and i live next to woodlands i thought it safer if he escaped and got lost. You try to do your best and thats all you can do. Accidents always happen.
