Im tossing around things i want to do with my pups, im actually going to watch a flyball practice in about 2 weeks but i was looking around the akc website and came across the obedience trial thingers...there was a part that said they have to be spayed or neutered, i was wondering if that ment all of the dogs have to be or just the dogs that arent akc registered!
Im doubled checking because they talk about dogs who are not akc registered or not on the list of breeds but this is still a good way for them to get awards and such!
Thanks!!

If you have a purebred dog who is not registerable, you can still compete in AKC trials if you get an ILP license (it is about $35 & you have to fill out a form that is available on their website & send in a front & side pic of your dog so they can determine it is a purebred dog).
AKC doesn't have an obedience classification for non-pedigreed dogs. It's a shame really.
HERE IS THE AKC ILP INFO (http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm)

They have to be AKC or ILP registered ... and the only dogs that qualify for that registration are AKC registered purebreds or dogs deemed to be purebreds get the ILP #. This, I assume, was added to allow for shelter rescue purebred dogs to be able to compete.

yea i kinda figured that too! well i'd like cainan or even corona to get involved since corona is learning her commands so fast! But i dont plan to spay her so i hope that isnt a rule!

Why don't you plan to spay her? AND YES, it is a rule ... for VERY good reason too. There are so many unwanted dogs in this world, it is irresponsible to breed unregisterable dogs solely for the purpose of having puppies.

From that same link I posted above ... AKC ILP INFO (http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm)
How can you apply for an ILP number?
Applications for enrollment into the Indefinite Listing Program can be downloaded (http://www.akc.org/pdfs/ilpform.pdf) or by emailing ILP@akc.org (ILP@akc.org). When requesting a form via email please include your name and current mailing address. Remember, ILP numbers can only be issused to AKC registrable breeds.
The following must be submitted with a completed ILP application:
Two recent and clear color photographs of the dog;
one full front view showing the facial characteristics of the dog;
one view showing the full side profile of the dog standing on a flat surface (not grass).
(ALL PHOTOS SHOULD BE TAKEN AT EYE LEVEL IN A STANDING POSITION,
INCLUDE THE WHOLE DOG IN THE PHOTO. DO NOT SHOOT DOWN ON THE DOG.)
Proof from a veterinarian that the dog has been spayed/neutered.
A non-refundable $35.00 application fee.

well their all purebred and registered...that really wasnt my concern! it was more along the lines of the spay and neuter was more of my question.
i was just curious because the obedience trial with not listed dogs or non-purebred seemed to be more talked about in the information than the purebred already registered!

I don't believe AKC registered dogs have to be spayed or neutered to enter any form of competition within AKC.

awesome! well to answer your earlier question the reason i am not spaying her...nor am i neutering cainan is so they can breed. BUT that is why im searching along the akc website to hopefully enter them into some cool and fun competitions and wins some awards so their more then just your average lab, ya know!
BUT again..haha...im doing all of my homework and applesmom has answered alot of my questions that i was unsure of, and def. keeping up with the things that need to be done with them to make sure they are top notch haha! and of course healthy!;)

What were you asking about here? I guess I'm confused. If you have AKC registration papers on your dogs who aren't neutered/spayed, there aren't any problems at all ... you can do obedience & breed without limitation.

my question was do they need to be spayed or neutered? BECAUSE there was so much talk in the information part of the website about non-registered/purebred dogs that it was unclear if that goes for my pups as well haha!
Oh BTW...coco is spayed though, so im not a terrible dog mom ;) hehe

Ah, I see ... yup, the ones who don't have real AKC numbers are the only ones with those restrictions. I think it is a very good rule about requiring spaying/neutering non-registerable dogs (just like shelters require spaying/neutering for all dogs who leave their facilities regardless of pure breed).
I don't like the idea that non-purebred dogs can't compete in AKC trials though. I really think the dog world would benefit greatly if more non-pedigreed owners got more involved with obedience trials.

Well i was looking around and by far the obedience looked more pup/owner one on one! i mean i really like agility and i think im gonna get cainan started this summer, but obedience...the dog has to be in tune with you all the time and know each command!...well i guess both of them do so i dont really what im trying to say!
WELL I AGREE haha is what im trying to say lol! but yea, i think it's a good opportunity for everyone to get involved and not make it about pedigree! :);)

Yep, I love obedience training & Ozzy plans to compete in AKC trials as far as he'll go & somewhere in the middle we'll do agility too.

The best advice I have for you is to join a local obedience club. To be successful in showing your dogs in AKC Obedience or Agility trials, you can't "just wing it". You need a solid background & preparation by those who have a strong background in obedience training.
Here are some clubs in Iowa:
Iowa Dog Clubs (http://www.barkbytes.com/sclubs/ioclub.htm)
To properly prepare for these shows, you will need to go to obedience classes especially if you haven't ever done it before. Your question the other day asking about the figure 8 exercise tells me you're a long way from actually entering the show ring with your dogs.
These links might help you with some info too:
Canine Shows and Activities (http://www.dogpatch.org/dogs/shows.cfm#A2)
Dog Owner's Guide: Obedience Trials (http://www.canismajor.com/dog/obedshow.html)
AKC sanctions events held by individual local dog clubs. There are likely to be several annually in your area.
InfoDog Show Calendar (http://www.infodog.com/showinfo/showCal.htm)
Different shows include different events. Some shows are all conformation, some are all obedience, some are mixed. Just depends on the club who is putting on the show.
AKC Entry form (http://www.akc.org/pdfs/AEN999.pdf)
OK ... there's some info that should get you pointed in the right direction. Have fun reading!

Thank you so much!I know im along way away, i never really intended on doing anything with them besides basic obedience but i figured i might as well!
When i think figure 8...i think about basketball because when i was in basketball when did the figure 8 alot in practice!
I've done obedience with cainan but they never talked about figure 8 so i was trying to picture it in my mind...i got nothing!
here's cainan...doesnt he look hansome!!!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l206/coco-bean/DigitalCameraPictures163.jpg
but then again it's just petco...so nothing fancy!
I teach more obedience at home then that...but basics like sit, stay, roll over, paw(shake), down...
i dont really know what else to do from there!
Coco and corona have these down pat...but cainan is scared to roll over, so i doubt he'll do that!
Coco will find her ball if i ask her too, but nothing more then just the ball
i really want to teach them to retrieve other objects but it's gonna take a while...with 3 that is!

Cainin looks great posing with his diploma! Give some of those clubs a call to see if you can get involved in obedience & working toward trials. WARNING: It's addictive! But well worth every bit of time & effort you put into it.
