is it true that a dogs liver cannot handle sweet food such as donuts etc not for a meal or anything obviously but just as a treat etc.

I wouldn't feed a dog donuts... those aren't even good for us lol... And ESPECIALLY nothing containing chocolate.
If you can find carob chips, that is a natural chocolate substitute and it is healthier... It would be okay to give your dog a few carob chips here and there as a treat if you want to give it sweets. Also, most dogs like fruit. Dogs can eat bananas, strawberries, blueberries, mango, papaya, apple. Steer clear of the seeds and keep them away from grapes and raisins. >^^;<

We give our pup little bites of table food including sweets here and there and have never noticed any ill effects. I have not heard of any issues with sweets in general, but I would certainly like to know if there is anything out there.
One food to definitely avoid is grapes as they can cause all kinds of problems for no known reason.

any fruit containing seeds is bad seedless grapes are ok apple seeds and grape seeds contain small amounts of arsinic this is what my vet has told me my dogs love apples and grapes and get them on a regular basis without the seeds

Other vets have said nobody truely knows what part of the grape is toxic, so I would avoid grapes completely. >O.o<

I know just like everything it could differ from dog to dog, but grapes have caused several instances of renal failure/death in dogs, fed in small amounts (2-3 grapes), and as far as I know, nobody has truely determined why the grapes did this... So I warn everyone anyway lol... >^^;<

Yeah! I tried giving Zoe banana last night too, and she took it from me, brought it into the livingroom, dropped it, then stared at it lol! So I took it from her, and she followed me into the kitchen. I pulled off a tiny piece and she ate THAT. So thinking, once she tried it, she will have the rest, I give it to her again and she turns and walks away. Crazy dog!

Not Zircon! I made the mistake of giving him a piece of banana and he tried to ROLL in it!
Never again!

I tried giving Zoe piece of my apple before and she thought it was a toy! lol She threw it around and played with it....

Lmao!! Sounds like Zoe. Whenever I give her something new/strange to eat, she'll throw it down, stare at it, pounce on it, paw it, etc. It's hilarious!

I have found this to be helpful when looking for info on what "human food" might be harmful to dogs.

I just read on here http://www.petwalk.com/articles/foodfordogs.htm that apples and carrots are not good for dogs. Is this true?

LoL...and I thought my dog was weird...every now and then I`ll slip her some banana and she`ll eat it. I`ll give her grapes...seedless grapes that is. But I never give her chocolate. At Petco they have a cookie bar that has some cool treats...I don`t know how those work, but if it`s there and for dogs, I guess it`s safe? They look like real cookies...(I ate some too...only because one of the workers said she ate them and I was like WHAT?!)

There are dog cookies (like they look like real chocolate chip cookies) but it's not real chocolate. I got them once for Zoe and Bear. They loved them!

That site also states that pets should only eat once per day. That's BS. Apples and carrots aren't bad for dogs. Apple SEEDS might be bad, but not the apple itself, and both apples and carrots are put into some of the best dogs foods (Innova, Eagle Pack Holistic, Solid Gold and more).
Also, once again I'd watch the grapes As far as I know, nobody has determined what part of the grape has caused several dog deaths so it's not necessarily the seeds. I would call several vets and ask before feeding a dog grapes of any kind.

That's what I thought. I just read on another site that apples and carrots are fine to give. Just not the core.
I agree. Do not give grapes, seedless or not.

Jed likes red delicious apples, so I sometimes slice some up, freeze them, and let him chew on them. As far as junky stuff, no, I rather not.
