My yorkie has very dry skin. I took her to the vet and they said she had a flea allergy but that's taken care of now. With that she lost a lot of hair on her back. I read somewhere that if you add a teaspoon of vegetable oil to her food, it will help with her natural oils, and help her hair grow back. Is that true, and safe for her??
Any other ideas on what i could do for her dry skin?? I've used many shampoo's and nothing has worked so far!

One fish oil capsule, daily or every other day, adds vitamins and anti-oxidants, as well as a little dietary fat, and can be very beneficial for the coat and skin. Some people use a spoonful of canola oil or olive oil, instead. Some people give a Vitamin E capsule for skin problems.
I've had good luck with my Greyhounds, giving them a 1000mg fish oil capsule, daily, with their evening meal.

Hi Alleyhorton and http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q108/2dogmom_album/crittergraphics/welcomepawprints.gif
Sorry to hear about your Yorkie's skin troubles.
May I ask how you dealt with the flea problem? The reason I ask is that I once CAUSED terrible skin problems for one of my dogs by using a low quality flea and tick shampoo.

Well Frontline is not low-quality (I hate to admit I actually washed my dog with Harz Flea and Tick Shampoo :( ) but still some dogs have a bad skin reaction to it.

Yes. A single fish oil capsule, or a teaspoon or two of oil added to the meal isn't going to hurt. Your dog doesn't need excess fat in its diet, but a little is good and necessary. The benefit of the fish oils is that, depending on what you decide to give, they may be a good source of the omega fatty acids.
Do you have a particular concern?

I agree only with a yorkie, make the dose smaller. Other good products are " Hair of the dog" or " Vita coat" by Dr. Fosters and smith..

Firstly; stop shampooing your dog all the time. Only shampoo once a month if that unless your dog is covered in mud and dirt, of course. Shampooing strips away the natural oils on the skin causing dry skin.
Flax oil is a greta oil to add to the diet as well, 1/4 teaspoon for a Yorkie should safice everyday. Also your can add a 1/4 teaspoon of olive oil a day as well. Most of the oils we eat and use for cooking are excellent for dogs, Canola, Olive, sunflower, corn. I use sunflower, canola and olive oils for my dogs and they get Flax oil everyday. Fish oil on ocassion (once a week) because it contains Vit A which in large quantities can become toxic.

Can you find that Fish Oil at your local Wal-Mart?

Agree with doberman's coments. Shampooing your dog too much can cause dry skin. You can shampoo a yorkie more than other breeds, but i'd say no more than once a month. Definately stop trying out the shampoos on her and leave her skin alone to recover. Yes ive heard the olive oil thing and yes its safe.:)
sorry id dont have a wal-mart so i cant say:(

A liitle bit of butter in the food or a good vegetable oil. I give this to mine and they have good coats and good skin.

I have been in rehab (in a nursing home!) for the past 3 months with 1-2 to go. Initially, the dog was taken care of by people I didn't know. When I got him back, all of a week ago, his skin was bone dry, dandruff/excema rampant, and shedding in copious amounts! First, a good professional grooming, replete with vet ordered shampoo (you can use the groomer's shampoo. I just had this.); next oil in the food (vegetable oil); the next step is an oil rich supplement which I am getting because I don't have easy access to a bottle of oil. [If I could give him some oil every day, I wouldn't do the supplement.] If you are good about giving him small amounts-not a 1/4 C a meal for example, you and s/he will be happier. The dog's coat will shine, the skin will be nourished, and the itch level will almost disappear.

No worries. Too much oil will have the opposite effect.
I tried Danex24 which did the job. It must be given daily in little capsule but it works and you will notice very soon.

Hi everyone,
I though I would get involved in this thread as it is close to my heart. I lost Rheena, a collie 2 years back. She came to me via Dog Rescue and had many problems. She was worn out by injections, vet products, chemicals etc.
So I decided that natural products was the way to go.
I give my 2 cockers Danex24 which is a great product and new in mnay ways. It is flea repellent, skin conditioner and coat repair etc all in a capsule. It is rich in Omega 6 oils which is needed by the coat and skin and have to be added via food or supplements. It also has no smell garlic and is amazing. I wish I had known about Danex24 earlier but I didnt. Please stear clear off all the products containing chemicals as the dogs system is not strong enough in the long run i.e. Fibronil which is the ingredient in FRONTLINE is on the list of dangerous chemicals etc. I hope you have it all sorted soon and I know how frustrating it all is.
