Hi Sue, I think this is quite a common thing with puppies my one did it once after I brought her home from the rescue but a good sharp NO and keep the puppy back and I used to give her a little treat for being a good girl she soon got the hang of it.

lol i wish i knew i have had several pups - dogs that did the same thing the breeder didnt have any answers nor did the vet i have found the best way to stop this is to correct the pup and to pick all droppings up asap it is a habbit that will follow them into adulthood if not corrected at a young age

This particular nasty little habit is hard to break, but she will eventually stop if you keep a close eye on her and are able to scold her right when she attempts it.

And yes, unfortunately, it is a common problem. :(

Poo for a dog is delicious. It is the byproduct of meat. For a dog it smells like meat, so they eat it.

My advise, clean up any poo as soon as possible, offer your pup as many toys, especially kongs, treats etc. to distract.

There is something you can add to their diet that will make it not so tasty.
This is available from pet stores and vets.

Never hit your pup for eating poo, if you want to admonish, do it in a loud voice, but make sure pup is in the act, or it will have no idea what you are telling it off for.

Add a small amount of pineapple to his/her food if they'll eat it - if not you can get tablets that contain the same stuff.
Pineapple has an enzyme in it that makes the poo break down differently and not smell/taste as nice to the dog.

Not exactly the same... but, Maddi used to raid the litterbox every chance she got. Scolding, most likely wont do anything, even if she's in the act. She, by eating the poop, is getting rewarded for doing it. Scolding her will only cause her to do it when your not looking/ not around. I know this is exactly what Maddi did.

The only thing that stopped Maddi from eating cat poop was to restrict her access to it. You can do similiar with your dog's poo. As soon as she's done pooing, take it away so she can't eat it.

My dog used to do it too. We tried the tablets and it seemed to work ok. But then were told pineapple will do the trick too, so we just do that now. Also, I clean it up right away. She's such a nut though. She will try to eat anything and everything off the ground. Not a good thing when outside, as you don't know what's out there.

Good place to find the tablets is Drs Foster and Smith. You can do a search for their site. Neat products there! Pineapple? Who-da thunk? lol God bless!
