View Full Version : Hayabusa- Arrival of Ms.Whippet!
So today was the day- we visited the breeder and brought home our first Whippet. Her name was "Castlecrest Out Of A Dream" or otherwise known as 'Reba' but we changed her name to Hayabusa or 'Busa' for short.. She is two years old as of March 14th, and a gorgeous young lady she is!
SHayabusa shows no prey drive or anything- even upon meeting my cat when we arrived home, and she is very timid. It is assumed that when she was shipped from the states to the breeder in which I purchased her from that she may have been abused by one of the people working with the frieght etc. She is shy of men, and slightly skittish- but is coming around perfectly!
Very calm and affectionate, and follows me at my hip everywhere I go! She loves her Milkbone treats, so I am going to work with her on some basic commands such as sit and lay down- maybe shake a paw if I get really in to it!
BUT.. first we must work on two things- #1 being her recall. She has none. Not even with her old name. Nothing.
And #2. the introduction to our Siberian Husky, Mocha. So- the fun begins! Pictures will be up soon I promise! But here are two that can help feed the hunger for all you Whippet addicts out there like myself!

She's stunning! Congratulations on your new family member! We definitely want to see more pics ... and then, more pics ... and, after that ... some more pics please!
As soon as my Fiance comes home we are going to take the two dogs for a ealk on opposing sides of the quietest street we can find, just to let them get a good look at one another- but not close enough for Mocha to take a bite! Lol

Yay! I am so excited for you! Busa is gorgeous, what a sweet face :) Do let us know how the walk goes, and keep those pics coming!
Okay, so first off it was crate to crate.
We put 'Busa in the travel crate with some munchies and a soft blanket, and then we put Mocha in the wire crate with the same kind of thing.
We had them about 7ft apart- and nothing happened. Left them like this for about 5-ten minutes. Then moved them half way closer.
We moved them until the wire crate was almost touching the travel crate and not a single sound. Well, we did get one deep growl from Mocha but I think it was because the cat decided to sit on top of the crates and swing her front legs around trying to 'fish out a dog snout'... Which she didn't succeed in doing, so she got fet up and left them alone.
Okay, second thing.. took them for a walk.
Bjorn walked Mocha on one sidewalk, I walked Busa on the other side.
No barks. No growls.
Busa was very shy at first, but after a minute was trotting happily along side me. It was about 11 o'clockish at night though, so we will try again in the morning. But so far so good!
One thing happen though that scared us!
Bjorn took Busa for a short walk around the block to get her used to her domain. (She had only been around the block/neighbourhood once before this) and.. the leash slipped out of his hand when Busa made a run for it due to a bulldog across the street wanting to challenge her!
So Bjorn calmly followed her and asked Busa to come here etc, knowing that she was shy of men already and had no recall whatsoever, so he didnt want to frighten her- and where does she run to?
She headed south- turned around immediatly after realizing that wasn't the right way. Headed east about three steps and turned around- and BOLTED west, straight toward our house, but he was afraid she would run right by.
She turned sharply on the street and ran across our lawn, then galloped right up the front steps and waited for Bjorn to catch up! It was soo amazing that she already knew where 'home' was.

Wow! Smart dog! Glad she knew how to find her way back home. Guess that confirms she's already feeling part of the family.
Any new reports on the two dogs getting to know each other today? Oh yeah ... and WE WANT MORE PICS, please!

Mojo- sighthounds can have problems with a reliable recall. Its that chase drive what they determine as more important- you- or what they see moving. Please take precautions. Never assume they won't chase.. It can turn on and off like a light switch- just that fast..
She is just beautiful!!!! And I see she already found herself a bed.. lol.. Full requirement for ownership and life with a sighthound.. lol.. Just beautiful!
