I have one tank-a 15g with a blue and a gold gourami, and two albino corys. I used to have a few red wag platys, a dwarf paradise gourami, and the blue gourami (I sort of adopted her, she got along well with them)-but unfortunately something happened within the tank and all but the blue passed. I thought I was going to lose her, but thankfully she made it through. I have gotten things under control, and although I'm still not certain what happened I think I will just stick to the fish I have now. I'm hoping in the near future (by the time these guys get too big for the tank) to get a 20-30g tank. I have a 5g hex too sitting in the garage that I'm thinking of stocking with some fancy guppies, if I can find a spot for them. :)

Your tanks are gorgeous! What kind of gravel do you have in the 10 and 55g? Is it a sand type or just the black rocks? What do you have, cichlids? What kind of plants do you have? I try to stay away from the live plants, because I got one one time, and I guess it died or something, it looked like a fern and the fluff from it went everywhere in tank, it was a real pain.

I have a 220 litre community tank (sorry not sure what that is in gallons), at the moment in there I have a Plec that is about 10 inches, 4 silver dollars, 2 rainbow sharks, 5 neon tetras, 2 Phantom tetras, a swordtail and a Pictus catfish. In the future I would really like a marine tank with a Lion fish in but at the moment I am still learning.

I love fish and birds along with dogs. I did have a big tank with Mollies, alot of different fish in I forget the kinds. I got tired of it and now have a Beta over soon 3 yrs. old. I have a Budgie bird that talks and talks, did have an African Grey, Cockatoo, Yellow Nape. Fish if not set up right can be too much work for me having dogs now of many. I love to watch them and said to help lower blood pressure staring into a tank. Just Beautiful!~~

Your tanks are beautiful. I haven't had any fish tanks for many years. I don't remember the size of the tank I had but it was a large one. My EX was the one who did all the tank cleaning, etc. so I divorced my fish.

I also had an outdoor koi pond ... it was there for years & then one winter some raccoons got to them. Eeekgads ... sorry guys, I thought we had given you a good home.

I think if I ever had tanks again, I'd give salt water fish a try (and maybe a much bigger & deeper koi pond).

I had an Amazon basin tank with peat substrate and blackwater species, for years. Then a friend gave me some gold-capped silver angels, and I had those for years, too. The last of the angels died, last year, and we tore down the last tank, for awhile.

i would love to do an amazon one, but the budget says no!! lol i had german blue rams and some albino corydoras and that was as close to that as i have gotten, i would love some true wild altum angels but they are hard to come by and expensive, i would like discus too but dont have the patience for them, daily water changes and constant upkeep is just too much for me right now. i just did water changes on all tanks today and its a pain in the but, i need a pyton lol so i dont have to lug the 5 gallon bucket back and forth from the bathroom to fill the water back up.

as for breeding guppies, that is fun, but once you discover mouth brooders and co paenting fish it gets even funner, which is why i got the bolivian rams, they should (crosses fingers) pair up and spawn around 100+ babies and then care for them until they are about 4 months old!!! its really interesting to watch.

We will have a tank setup, hopefully, in a few months. We bought a 55 gal tank and Fluval 305 canister filter (got that off ebay, saved a lot vs. buying in store)...and have stopped in a few pet stores to look at fish. Oh my, there are so many to choose from! The salt water fish are definitely the most unique and colorful of the fish :)
We've been eying the Parrot Head (Cichlid species) fish...they come in some pretty colors, like blue, pink, and peach...I will definitely get some pink ones...one of my favorite colors :)
Sabledog, hope you don't mind if I contact you in the future about some "fish" questions, you must be a very experienced fish keeper if you have 5 tanks..whoa!

PLEASE PLEASE dont buy a parrot fish!!!!! thay are man made hybryds and not born that color!!!! thay are injected with dye through a human size syrynge and it is painful, torturous and often fatal to them, buing them only supplies the horific people who "craft" these fish for money please if you like cichlids then get a natural one not a parrot fish!!!!!!! there are tons of beutiful natural colord speciese to choose from that are far better than those!!! if you want to see some examples got to http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/categ.cfm?siteid=21&pCatId=864 and look at some of those to give you an idea of what you want.

Oh my:eek: I had no idea! I just assumed that fish are fish...and I didn't know they were injected with color! I'm sorry, I really didn't know. I just thought they are the cutest and one of the more unique looking fresh water fish I have ever seen.

Are there any other fish I should avoid?

anything neon colored like painted tetras, glass catfish with neon stirpes, they are now tatooing mollies with saings and polka dots, the parrotfish are being tatooed with i heart u on the sides of them, theres lots of fish that are dyed but you usually see the difference right away, if you go to www.deathbydyeing.org (http://www.deathbydyeing.org/)they have alot of info on there about it.

That's too bad because I really like the parrot head cichlids :( I think they are one of the nicest looking and unique freshwater fish around. Bummer.:( Leave it to someone to go and make something that shouldn't be. Thank you for the link Sabledog. :)

Are there any "natural" parrot heads, or is the species itself entirely man made?

Sabledog
04-21-2007, 02:53 AM
its entirely man made its commonly a cross between a servum cichlid and a red ddevil cichlid but there are other crosses they do to make them the way they are, the jelly bean parrot (small ones) are even worse, not to mention that because they are a man made hybrid they do not breed they are born sterile, which says alot right there if they were and acceptable mix in nature it would have allowed them to reproduce, but they cant. im not saying hybridization is wrong but when you are combining 2 seperate species its wrong, my rainbowfish will interbreed but its all the same species just different color and body variations, do you see what i mean? i know its complicated but its the best i can do to explain, there are natural color "parrot fish" but they are bland and normally a light flesh tone or tan which is why they dye them to make them more appealing. if you want a large very atractive and colorful cichlid i would go with a flowerhorn, they are not cheap and dont get along well with many other fish but they are really nice to look at!!!

Of Course he is alone, I learned the hard way lol. I rescued him from my science class a couple years back. He was in a tiny tank with 3 goldfish. I rescued all 4. I was told Salt was a goldfish. He was all completely grey and I thought he was the ugliest goldfish I had ever seen. I went on a fish forum and they identified him as a cichlid. I did my research and got him a 30 gallon tank all by himself. I can't even have him in with snails, he will either eat them or push around the snail with his nose. once I changed his food to cichlid food and got a bigger tank if color completely changed. What a handsome man he changed to! :) I love him to death, such a personality! He has grown so much the past year.

they are great fish tons of personality and they are fun to watch, i cant beleive they though he was a goldfish?? how can they even think he looks remotley close to one??? thats funny. and he was in a science class? not a very good teacher for that huh? lol good for you rescuing him he would likely have died from ammonia poisoning in with goldies as they are dirty dirty fish lol but i do love them too. i want a pond but have nowhere to put one yet.
