I ran across this site and thought I would share:

There are pictures of dogs taken from the display in the Rothschild Zoological Museum in England. It is interesting if you are into historical development of breeds. They have Basset hounds, Dachshunds, Spaniels, and dogs I have never heard of (Chinese Happa Dog).

They also have pictures of purebred dogs from 1923 (http://www.messybeast.com/history/1923dogs.htm). Some of them look about the same, but many don't.

Thank you, that is very interesting. There was an artical in 'dogs today ' magazine, about the development of breeds in the last 100 years or so, after they began to LOOSE their jobs, with the industrial revolution, and they began to be bred for looks rather than their working ability. the change in the basset hound is the shockingest.

I have been looking the picture of the Borzoi and checking it with my Borzoi Book of Champions and it looks like one of the Addlestone Breeding from around1923/24, if so these were bred my A Mrs AVlasto who bred a lot of champions in the early part of 1900.These were described as White with Tan markings or white with Tan Brindle markings. .

Thanks skunkstripe for sharing these links very interesting.

Docked tails would mean a working dog- not taxed..

Borzoimon I have always been interested in the history of the breed and when The Borzoi Club here in the Uk brought out these books of champions I bought them . They are my Borzoi Bibles and I have had endless hours of pleasure goint through these they start from the late 1800's and the latest one came out last year. I find I them so informative.

Wow! I didn't notice that when I first looked. What a difference 80-something years makes.

I only noticed it when I clicked on the picture and enlarged it . Also the Basset Hound then looks much longer in the leg than it is today and the ears look much shorter:) :)

people killed off some of the purebred in the olden days.
china and other places killed breeds almost to exsintion so there enemies wouldnt get there purebred dog.
not smart not smart at all, then they killed thosands of innocent dogs by beaten them, etc

I actually like the old bull terriers, they just look stupid now lol I like the longer legs on the Doxi too, it looks sooo much better, and a million times more useful, same with the basset, a dog that falls over his own head isn't very useful lol. I like the old Pug too, it looks like it could breath, the nose is longer the head is smaller. THOSE are what all the breeds SHOULD look like, those dogs look functional, nowadays those same breeds couldnt work if they tried, because they are hindered by thier own body parts lol

Yes, for sure. I had to do a double take, thinking they got it wrong.
