I currently have a really cute little staffy cross foster dog. I have had her for three weeks and she has shown herself to have a fabulous friendly temperament with people and other animals. She is learning quickly, and despite a bad start in life is happy, playful and bold. I think she will make someone a really lovely pet.

BUT the very same weekend the rescue started to advertise her for adoption (following recovery from her spaying, putting on weight etc) here in NZ we had a woman killed by two dogs. Of course one has been reported as a pitbull cross so now everyone will steer clear of adopting anything remotely bull breed. Poor baby, she deserves a second chance.

Thats terrible to hear. Not all dogs are bad, and they shouldn't make it out as just the bull breed. I hate that, any breed can attack, even a little Pomeranian. (Which has happened before) So it doesn't matter the breed or the size. Poor baby, i hope she finds a loving forever home. If i lived near, i would surely take her.

Oh, that is really bad timing. I do hope you'll be able to continue to work with her & find her a proper home.

Yup, she will stay with me for as long as it takes because I honestly believe she has a good future with someone. She has a lot going for her, her only 'fault' is being enthusiastic and under-trained (but learning quickly now), and being born a bull breed.

I am not in general a bull breed fan, and I do understand the hysteria since when a bull breed does attack they can inflict extremely serious damage, but believe me if I had seen any warning signs with this dog I would be the first to 'err on the side of caution' and recommend she not go up for adoption. But the reality is she hasn't put a paw wrong, is getting on well with my other dogs and cats, and just wants someone to cuddle.

Well bless you for taking her on. If there is anyone who is a good judge of behavior and who knows the well-thought out ways to teach a dog to be a "good dog" in a human world it is you.

awww she is adorable.. cute couple I have to say.. who's the guy?? ;)
If I lived over there and had a house Id come direct and pick her up.
Id love to have a staffie/pitbull/bully that works great with other dogs.
In sweden you could never find them and once you found them here my landlord said no... *sighs* I love bullys!!

Thanks for the support guys, means a lot as I was feeling a bit depressed about her chances due to the recent bad publicity. Apparently two people who initially showed interest changed their minds after the weekends events without even meeting her!

Tim, my OH is with Hope (the rescue named her but I would have called her Tigger as she loves to bounce and is full of energy).

Thanks again :)

hey... keep the dog.. they look good together..
You have good taste ;)

I feel so sorry for her.. Im sick and tired of people judging the breed instead of the people raising them.. *sighs*

It will work out.. *huggles* some good person will see the truth, and if they didnt know better and changed their minds that easy they were not prolly good for her anyhwo!

She's a beauty! And that pic just screams "I'm willing and I'm a happy girl!". She's very lucky to have you in her world. I do hope you're able to find her the perfect forever home & have absolute confidence that you're exactly the kind of trainer she needs to make her the best dog she can be.

Lovely dog. :)

This really irritates me. Just because a dog is a pitbull or a cross or Staffie means nothing other then it is a DOG! I have yet to meet a mean bully type dog but then again I have only known responsible owners that have took the time required to teach and nuture their dogs.

I own a breed that was once considered the same way Pitbulls, Staffies and bully type dogs are now. It takes time and responsible breeding but I do beleive given the proper chances Pitbulls can rise from the ashes of media hysteria and become as Dobes have and that is a respected bredd that people are still wary of but understand now most of what was thought to be a Doberman was made up by the media and bad breeders. Sorry ranting. Once again a subject that gets me riled. LOL!

Give hugs to your lovely rescue for me and here's a prayer for her to find a forever home with a person that loves her and understands her.:)

Well, now the media have become fixated on dog attacks and over the weekend an 8 year old boy has been hospitalised due to an attack by two pitbulls. None of this bodes well for finding a good home for little Hope who continues to show absolutely no sign of aggression. I took her to the dog club to have a walk around and see how she coped with meeting some other dogs (that I could guarantee are friendly), and she did just fine. The cats are now completely at ease around her, and the neighbours children have met her under supervision without any issues.

But, she is really up against some prejudice. My in laws came round yesterday for a visit, and met Hope for the first time. They are not bull breed fans, but fell for Hope as she was really cuddly with them (she knows how to make friends). At one stage my MIL (who has lived with dogs all her life) said 'if it wasn't for the grandchildren visiting I would be tempted to take her home, but I just couldn't take the risk'. They have a much larger golden retriever at home and the kids also live with a large golden retriever. Bottom line is even someone who has met her, seen her behave well and show absolutely no sign of aggression, is a dog - lover, but still has breed prejudice :(

By the way my MIL is a lovely person, and I had no intention of having them adopt Hope, but I just found the proof of what she is up against a bit sad.

There's no doubt about it, she's going to require a special home with special people. But, you yourself are proof that people like that do exist so don't give up "hope" on Hope. I have every faith you'll find her perfect family.

Well, the good news is that every day she continues to learn and improve. She has put on weight and looks healthy. Took her to the vets last night for her 2nd set of vaccinations and she managed to charm a complete stranger into buying her a dried liver treat :)

Sounds like she's got the personality that is going to choose her future forever home to me. She apparently has heard the rumors about her breed & is going to do her part in squelching those ideas by those who are misguided.

Great to hear she's doing so well. She looks very happy to be with her new buddy.
