A hauler carrying 38 hounds crashed outside Birmingham, AL, on 4/27/07, near milepost 181 on I-59, at Gadsden, AL. 2 hounds are still on the loose and possibly still near the interstate. These hounds have never been outside the track environment and are muzzled, and I'm sure dehydrated and scared to death. Please be on the lookout if you are in that area, and notify local law enforcement or animal control if you spot one. Search teams with recall squawkers are out looking for these hounds.

Of the 38 hounds, 16 escaped from the trailer. Those that did not escape survived in relatively good condition. Of the 16 that escaped, 4 died immediately, hit by cars on the Interstate as they ran. 8 were captured yesterday and overnight. 1 was captured this morning and another was spotted and about to be captured, leaving 2 on the loose.

This is the first wreck for this hauler in over 20 years of hauling hounds. The driver is OK. The rig is totalled. Folks in the Grey commmunity from all over the southeast have converged on the area to help in the recovery.

OMG, those poor dogs are likely terrified & I do hope they're found before they get too dehydrated (or worse).

Wow. I didn't hear anything about that, yet. That is only 1 hour away from my house...well, B'ham is. Gadsen is 2 hours... Hope them dogs'll be okay. I won't be anywhere NEAR that area...Aw, that's sad. :'(

Everyone- please keep in mind- sighthounds can travel a long way in a short amount of time.. Its common to find sighthounds states away from where they were lost! ..

Permission to cross-post?
Sure. Just check to see if it is already posted, first. No need to duplicate, and whoever is maintaining the post on that site will be making updates, I'm sure. A Greyhound Amber Alert went out on this, and most of the Grey forums are getting updates. I wanted to expand it outside the Grey community to other interested dog owners.

As of this afternoon, another Greyhound body has been found along the Interstate, and word has come that one of the ones from last night died at the vet. So, we are down to 1 missing. A female. No description, though.

At noon, there was still one Greyhound missing. With her muzzle on, she can still drink, but she can't eat. The wreck happened at about 4:30am on Friday, so she's been without food for a full 56 hours, plus.

More details of the wreck are emerging, and it appears the driver was not at fault. That's great news, because he is such a good guy and has run many hauls for us. It appears his trailer was clipped, and he started fish-tailing and ended up in the median, then the trailer popped into the air and landed on the cab of the pickup. It's a wonder so few hounds were lost.

The one hound is still missing. Even with all the extra traffic through the region after Talladega, no sightings. If you are in the vicinity of Gadsden, AL, please remain on the lookout for this lost Greyhound.

I have heard that there may be no more hounds missing. Apparently, there wasn't much left of the hounds that were hit, and identification was made by recovered parts. It seems that, on closer examination, there may have been more parts than identified hounds. If there was a fifth hound among the two groups that were hit immediately after the accident, then all hounds are accounted for. A small comfort from eyewitnesses is that none of the hounds that were hit suffered.

Thanks for the update. I am sorry that so many didn't make it out but very pleased that most of them made it to their destination.
