Hello all. Let me start by saying that I have a five year old cat. I wanted to alter her when she was younger but my dad didn't want to. Now she is in heat and she's making my mom and the rest of my family miserable. She bleeds on things, sprays them, and I'm pretty sure you guys know the rest of her 'symptoms'. Oh, and we don't have any male cats..

My mom mentioned the other day just letting her get pregnant so that she'd 'stop' and I'm wondering about how\and if it would change her personality.

Also, if she had kittens I'm sure I'd be the one to take care of her and the kittens. I'm wondering how much responsibility it would be. We've had kittens before when I was younger and I've never really had to take care of them myself before.

Thanks for reading :)

It's going to be less expensive to get her spayed. It's going to be more of a mess with the kittens-they aren't born knowing how to use a litter box, they will get into everything...etc. Not to mention if the momma cat has complications or rejects the litter-you'd need to hand feed the kittens. Then when the kittens are old enough they need their first shots and wormings and stuff like that, not to mention if you have birth defects and medical problems.

Cats as a species are SO overpopulated-I don't think bringing any more into this world is a good thing. Think of how many stray cats you see everywhere-much, much more than dogs. What are you going to do with the kittens when they get old enough to leave mom? If you are going to spay and neuter all of them and keep them, then go ahead...but you honestly can't sell kittens, and when you give them away-a lot of them end up as snake food, a cruelty case from some bored sicko, or as strays that end up creating more kittens.

I think you are better off just getting the spay done-it's cheap now, about $100 or so, and well spent money.

I heard somewhere that if the cat is too old and she is spayed then she would still spray and stuff. Is that true?

OK ... I bred cats for 20 years so this question is right up my alley.

She bleeds on things, sprays them, and I'm pretty sure you guys know the rest of her 'symptoms'. Oh, and we don't have any male cats

First off, cats in heat don't bleed ... if you're seeing blood, it is coming from a different source.

Female cats will spray if they are not spayed. It is not too late to spay your cat & I highly recommend it. Please don't allow her to have kittens. The world is overpopulated enough with unwanted kittens.

She will likely calm down & you've got a better than 90% chance that she will quit spraying after her spay. She should also calm down considerably.

Most cats who have been bred & have litters are back in season again within 3-5 weeks after delivery. If she's allowed to breed & comes in heat again, she will spray twice as much. Save yourself the headache & have her spayed.

Thanks a lot for that info!! I'll try to get my dad to let me spay her. :)
