Zubin and Galina are finally old enough. Galina will be out of the action for a while, but I am looking forward to it. Its been years since I have done this, and can't wait for the fall to get him in his first group. A group that was inactive in northern virginia is forming, and this should be fun.
Anyone else participate in this??

Its requires very little training really- its based off of the natural instinct for sighthounds to chase. I am attaching the link on more information, including how to get titles. http://www.akc.org/events/lure_coursing/index.cfm

I waited to start my younger two because although injuries are rare- they can happen, and I did not want a problem with growing bones.

There's a group down in the Hampton Roads/Norfolk/Virginia Beach area, but I think that's the closest one to Richmond. I haven't taken Zen, because he has been enjoying his retirement too much to be bothered with running, and the puppy is still too much of a wild child to behave herself.

Oh man my dogs would absolutely love to do that. They love chasing rabbits and this would be a blast for them. Looks like they can't be mixed breeds though. I wouldn't even care if they competed, they would have fun doing it for no reason.

What type of conditioning do you do to prepare for these events?

How long would it take to bring a household pet up to the proper physical condition for competition in lure coursing?

I did it for fun with Titus and he went absolutly berserk!!.
Try holding a 90 pd dog of muscle who is screaming and whinning to go.
Who would ever go berserk, for a simple plastic bag!.
Titus is really good at it and can hold his own.
It's a pity that the only dogs allowed to perform for titles, are hound dogs.
There's nothing prettier than a dog going full tilt.
To do that yr dog does need to have a lot of prey drive and that's why hounds are so good,at it.

The conditioning we did was free runs- no stress of having to chase something but gets the muscles ready for the run. The problem is, but solved at the junior course level, is that they want to be the first one there so bad, they can over do it. Usually they run junior courser( one dog) for several times so they are not competing with other dogs. Sighthounds will run til they drop, and want to get there first, so the junior level, people take their time getting out of it..
My dogs, besides running in my yard, I also do 1-2 mile walks. The dogs trotting builds muscle and conditions the dog without impact of the " run". You are walking quickly as they trot on ahead. And not forced.. For a year I did 1/2 mile down, 1/2 mile back but letting them slow down to a walk at anytime. I also do not use hard surfaces. ( like sidewalks etc) This also strengthens even the toes as a sighthound has a hare foot- tight knuckles but extended toes ( long).

Its not to chase animals- they chase a lure- ie a white paper bag on a line.. If the drive is there, they will do it- and enjoy it too..

I know that, :p but training her to do that will increase prey drive and increase how often I'm cleaning up dead squerril...:sicksmiley:
