Here's a photo of the new puppy in our family.

The adoption agency said it is a Border Collie mix, but I see a lot of Bernese Mountain Dog.

What do you think?

Thank you!

Gary

Hi siegel2,
give us an age and a weight and we can take a guess.
Don't know where you are, but in the US anytime a shelter does not know what a dog is, they use the following simple but wrong rules:

White Spot means Border Collie. Not true, you can mixe two purebreds who are both not BC and get a white spot. Heck, you can get a white spot on a PB Black Lab.

Spots on tongue mean Chow or Shar Pei. Not true, just like humans have freckles, dogs can have spots on their tongue. Now if the entire tongue is black, that is a different story.

There are more, but I cannot think of them know. Like I said, post age/weight please so I can guess how big he/she will be when full grown.

Thanks for your reply, skunkstripe. The puppy in the photo is about 5 or 6 weeks old and weighs about 20 pounds.

5 or 6 wks and already weighs 20 lbs?!? WOOHOO that is going to be a big doggy! Easily over 100 lbs if not 120.
I buy the Bernese Mountain Dog and forget the Border Collie!!

I also agree that it is a Bernese. He's definately going to be a BIG dog!!!

Our shelter where I live in Saskatchewan, Canada is the same way...everything that they cannot correctly identify that is medium sized and has black and white is a border collie. And trust me they couldn't identify a Chinese Crested. LOL. Any thing that is big is a german shepherd/black lab cross no matter what it looks like. Unless of course it is big and has some white on it. Then they used to call them Great Pyrenees cross, now they are Kuvasz crosses. I think they just pick a certain breed every week and anything that comes in is that breed crossed with something else.

As a matter of fact I was on their site the other day and what a mess that was. They had probably 10 different breeds misspelled. Kuvasz was spelled Kuvaz, Pyrenees was spelled Pryeneese, Terrier was spelled Terrior, Shepherd was spelled Shepard and so on. It kind of makes me mad that they have uneducated people that don't know crap working with these animals.

Sorry for rambling and getting off topic but it annoys me LOL.
