I'll just use a real time that this question arose. I was looking at cookiemama's post about her dog possibly being in heat. The thing I am wondering about is if It is alowed to link websites that I think might help with it. Is this allowed or should I just PM it to her?

I'll let one of the mods answer that question for you as it isn't my place.

However, I'll tell you what criteria I've used to make the decision on what to post or not post.

If it is a regular informational site, I feel free to link them. If the information can be found within this site, I try to always link the Dog Forum thread first (if I know the thread exists & I usually do a quick search). If it is a personal site or a thread within another pet/dog forum, I DO NOT link them here & would send a PM instead.

Hope this helps till a mod shows up.

Katz is pretty much right on with the advice. Here is a partial quote from the TOS:

You are EXPECTED to:
Link to internal sources of information before linking to external sources. If information on this site is of comparable quality to information from another site, use the information here.
source: http://www.dogforum.org/showthread.php?t=3135
In other words, do a search here first and if nothing shows up, go ahead and link to another site.

However, if YOU happen to be the owner of the site or have a personal interest, or it is a friend's site, than you cannot post the link.

You ARE NOT allowed to use DogForum.org to:
Advertise or promote products and/or services that you or someone you know has an "interest" in, which includes linking to a personal website

Obviously we are not thrilled about seeing links to other forums since we want everyone to stay here :) so if the only decent info out there is on some other forum, putting it in a PM is a good way to do it.

Thanks for clearing this up!

Yes, you definitely may link to other sites within a few rules. The primary rule is that you may not link to any site that you or someone you know owns, operates, etc. as the line between helpful links and advertising/promoting gets very fuzzy in such cases. Beyond that, it's mostly common sense - if there's a good thread here on a topic, link to it before linking elsewhere; if there's someone good elsewhere that's pertinent to a discussion, by all means post it if it doesn't violate the guidelines above.
