View Full Version : Help me please with puppy peeing problem

I just got a puppy about 4 days ago he has been really good except he wont stop peeing. We are cage training him and everytime i take him out of the cage he will pee on the ground. Sometime i dont even have enough time to get his collar to bring him out. It seems that he has to pee every hour. What should i do?

well, my puppy pottys almost every hour... ive read some younger puppies pee alot.

Don't let him out of the crate until you are prepared to pick him right up. No walking to the door - carry him outside. If he tries to bolt out of it as soon as you open the door, there is something you can easily teach this early.
Make him wait calmly until the door is all the way open. You can do this by beginning to open the door, but if he runs toward it or scratches at it, slam it right back in his face and wait (a calm "nope" while you're doing this might help). When he's calm again, and preferably sitting down, try opening it again. Repeat the above. Eventually, he'll learn that he has to stay on there till the door is all the way open. That way when you open the crate door, you can grab him up easily and carry him straight outside. >^_^<

waht if i just want to play with him. rather then take him to go to the bathroom

why not play with him after he's been to the toilet??

That's right. The puppy is ALWAYS going to need to potty AS SOON AS it comes out of the crate. Before anything else. When that door opens, no eating, no drinking, no playing. Potty first.

9 weeks
We had to do that w/ our dog. As soon as she came out of the crate, it was outside to potty BEFORE anything else. :) Even if she didn't have to go potty at that particular time she knew that the first thing she does is go outside just in case. This has taught her to hold it better because she knows she'll go outside immediately.

My puppy is 8 weeks now and when she was 6 weeks old I took her out every 1/2 hour to avoid accidents and she peed every time! Now at 8 weeks I feel lucky she can hold it an hour. When they are so tiny they cannot hold it long. It's nothing about being a good or bad dog, they just have to go more often. One vet told me they cannot control holding it until they are 16 weeks old so I prefer to take her out hourly to get her in the habit of doing it outside.

decheecko at that age they need to pee often and that is all there is to it. Also they cannot 'hold it' and do not understand how to know when they need to go. Kind of like human babies, they are not born knowing to tell you to put a diaper on them because they need to pee.
You did not say what kind of dog you have, this page is very nice I think, and just because it is written for Golden Retrievers does not mean it does not apply to other dogs.
