This question came up and since I thought for a while that Zircon might be part Rat Terrier, I thought I would share what I had learned for myself.
The Rat Terrier is also known as a "Feist" (often misspelled) and is a fairly recent development in breeding dogs for a purpose in the American south. Farmers were looking for a dog to keep vermin in check, and mixed genes from the smaller sighthounds (Italian Greyhounds and Whippets), Beagles (for tracking), and Terriers (for the hatred of rodents) to come up with a small (<25 lbs), short-haired dog that can be relied on to kill any rats it sees or smells. One characteristic of these dogs is a shrill, high-pitched "yip yip yip" they make when they are going after a rat, chipmunk, squirrel, or other fast running rodent.

The RTCA is seeking AKC recognition for this breed and in doing so there have been some tensions regarding the breed standard between the RTCA and the NRTA.
The NRTA recognizes different "types" of Rat Terriers, the Type "A" with normal length legs and a Type "B" with shorter legs.

Since the NRTA fears that the breed will lose it character when granted AKC recognition (kind of like the disagreement between the JRTCA and the JRTBA, now the PRTAA over the Jack Russell / Parson Russell Terrier) they are sticking to their own registry.

Well my Jackie fits that description, except that she is highly active and needs a lot of grooming(she hates to be clean). They aren't lying when talking about them being a watch-dog. Any noise or anything she sees that she does associate with our family she barks like crazy and wont stop til we let her know its ok. Sometimes even then she keeps barking until she feels its ok even if the noise came and went.

We've got two of them all though one is quit mixed, probably with beagle. The one that isn't mixed is just like the description says. They are fun(if you like little killers) and highly intelligent dogs. Ours is 8y/o and an amazing dog and is still fast as lightning and kill rodents like there is no tomarrow.

We forgot his life jacket at the campground which is 1.5 hrs away so he got to go without, but we kept a close eye on him.

Thanks for the info! Mark's parents just got one. We haven't seen it yet but plan to go meet the pup in the near future. I'm a little more than concerned about this as his Mom is pretty well known for "trading in" pets with behavioral issues. Fingers crossed, this pup works out.

They are high energy, loud, quick moving, little chasers. Make sure they give it tons of exercise and something to occupy it's mind, they aren't idle minded lap dogs. Though they do make great lap dogs as long as they aren't squirrelly from boredom.

I think my new girl Penny might be part Rat Terrier or some other feist type. She fits very well personality wise.
