Hi all,
Oscar (our Border Terrier) is in to his 9th week now and has been with us for nearly 2.
He's settled in really well at the house and had only two nights of crying! excellent.
What is concerning me, however, is the toilet training and obediance... how much should I expect of a 9 week old puppy?
He will go outside (if taken out) and sometimes seems to know it is wrong to go to the toilet inside... he will still wee & poo inside, however, often very near us... I am concerned my approach to training is wrong.
Second is his reaction to a stern "NO". It seems to pass him by completely and whether it be biting / chewing etc... a NO will be ignored... any advice on how to improve this?

Hi G & Oscar!
How much should you expect? Well about what you would expect from a baby in diapers I would say. They really cannot 'hold it' until they are about 3 months old.
You might try looking hre, I have found some useful advice

I agree, but he will cotton on sonn, besides with the weather we are having at present it should not be too long. Ive come to the conclusion that some breeds are much slower than others to be toilet trained or it is my imagination?.

Puppies aren't born understanding english, so understanding what "no" means will take a lot longer than 2 weeks lol...

What has always worked for me for potty training is to get them to go on the newspaper first. I usually use one of those rubber foot mats with newspaper on it. If he is going potty on the floor pick him up and move him onto the newspaper. After he does his business give him a treat. He will eventually figure out that if he goes to the bathroom on the paper he will get the treat. Once he's figured that out slowly move the mat towards your door. Once it is right at the door for a while, put it outside your door. Then when he has to go he will be wandering around looking for his mat and that will be your clue that he has to go to the bathroom. Put him out to the bathroom and remember to keep up with the treats. Once he has learned that his mat is outside you can take away the mat. You need to be home quite a bit for this to work though. Also if he is having trouble understanding the word "no", if he knows his name already then say his name first and then "no". That way you get his attention. Otherwise for all he knows you could be talking to another person that is in the house. Also make sure that you tell him no to his face for a bit and then take away whatever he is chewing on whether it be your hand or a shoe. Best of luck and keep us updated on his progress.

No.. I heard that too, I think it's the toy breeds that are really hard to train..... and i have a proof too:D
