View Full Version : Upset tummy

Our 10-month-old puppy woke up this morning with an upset stomach. She went straight outside for "business" and passed runny poo about four times.
She's eating and very playful, but she still has an upset tummy.
We're trying to switch her over to a better dog food which may be the culprit (we're at a mix of 50% old and 50% new for the last 2 days) and she also ate a rawhide last night (not a usually treat).
One other thing - she had parvo when she was 2 months. We took her to the vet a few weeks ago (right after we adopted her) and he said she's in perfect health.
Two questions: What should we watch for? How long should we wait before calling the vet?
Thanks!

This doesn't directly answer your questions, but rawhide always makes our pup have digestive issues. It usually makes her sick for a few days (thus no more rawhide for her). Our vet has told us to give her about 2 tablespoons of Pepto when she has issues like that and to call her if things don't clear up in a few days.

Before the Pepto, just plain canned pumpkin or plain yogurt... I've found they usually help...
However, if it's uncontrolable diarrhea, than the Pepto would be a good option... but call your vet for an opinion and dosage amounts.
I read somewhere that once a dog has parvo, they won't get it again (like humans and chicken pocks). I don't know if it's true or not, but it'd be something to research. Also, I wouldn't give raw hides, they're full of chemical preservatives, can be choking hazards... and might also cause blockages. You might consider RMBs instead as they are a much healther alternative :) .

Thank you both for responding so quickly.
I've been wondering about rawhides - if they're good or bad. Sounds like they're not the best treat to give.
She's sleeping now but I can hear her tummy rumbling. :-( I think I'll call the vet's office about dosage on the Petpo. I don't have any pumpkin or plain yogurt on hand. (Actually, I'd have to step out to get the Pepto too.)
BTW, what are RMBs? Real meat bones??
Thanks again! I'll post again when her condition changes - hopefully for the better!

I give Zoe a spoon of canned pumpkin with every meal. Her stool is always smooshy, naturally. She has a sensitive tummy, and I find that the pumpkin helps.

Close, Raw Meaty Bones :D . That would be things like chicken wings/necks, lamb ribs, etc. And, if you're not comfortable with giving her edible bones, than you can give her a recreational bone, like a marrow bone. They are much healthier and help keep teeth cleaner :) .

Agree with the bones :)
You can also give Kaopectate to help with the runny monster. :)

Well this may be a case of over protective parents. Vet says she's fine. In fact she went #2 outside the vet office and it was fairly solid. The vet gave us two types of pills and gave her two shots. She didn't have any business for maybe a day but now she's normal again. Best guess is that she ate a bug or something like that. I think the fact she had Parvo at a young age caused us to panic extra. Thankfully false alarm this time.
Thanks everyone.

As a comment on the above, I was told to starve the dog for 24 hours and then just give some cooked rice and a little chicken or fish for a day or so when there's an upset tum. Gives the digestive system a break!
